Soap opera icon Susan Lucci, 79, looks half her age in low-cut gown… 7 years after she almost died from a heart attack

Susan Lucci does not seem to age.

The former soap opera star, famous for playing Erica Kane on the show All My Children, looked amazing at age 79 while walking the red carpet on Thursday evening.

A celebrity appearance brightened the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women Red Dress Collection Concert held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

She wore a stunning scarlet red dress with a low neckline and a fitted waist. She completed the look with a diamond heart pendant and matching hoop earrings.

This comes seven years after she suffered a near-fatal heart attack in October 2018.

In October 2018, she woke up one night with pain around her ribs and trouble breathing. She knew immediately that something was wrong.

It was late at night, and she hesitated to call her doctor. She didn’t even mention it to her husband right away. She simply went to bed.

Lucci explained that she was initially dismissing some concerning feelings. However, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her jaw, which she remembered reading could be a sign of a heart problem in women. This realization immediately made her take the situation seriously.

Her husband encouraged her to call her cardiologist at home, and he responded immediately. “He told me he’d meet me at the emergency room and to call him when I was nearby,” she recalled.

By the next morning, doctors had placed a stent in one of her blocked arteries – it was 80% blocked – which likely prevented a major heart attack.

Dr. Richard Shlofmitz, head of cardiology at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York, believes the condition could have worsened rapidly, possibly within a year. He identified the issue and then treated it, explaining that it developed gradually, like debris accumulating around a log in a river.

Several years before, the actress experienced a heart problem. Doctors found that two of her arteries were significantly blocked – one was 90% blocked and the other 75%.

For a couple of weeks, Lucci dismissed some worrying symptoms until she experienced severe chest pain that forced her to go to the hospital. Doctors quickly placed two stents – tiny mesh tubes that open blocked arteries and restore blood flow to the heart – which resolved the issue and likely saved her life.

The actress, who lives on Long Island near New York City, said things quickly went back to normal for her. She was performing on stage just two days after leaving the hospital, and she felt her life continued to be great.

In New York, she paid tribute to her late husband while accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards in December 2024.

The actress started her speech by excitedly sharing that it was especially meaningful to her that Susan Lucci’s son, Andreas, was present.

She said, accepting the award, ‘Having you here means the world to me.’ She then added, looking at him, ‘I really feel like my dad is here with us tonight, too.’

She went on to express her gratitude to her husband, Helmut Huber, explaining that he was the reason she was able to accept the award that evening.

Oh my gosh, I’m still heartbroken thinking about it! Les Dennis, Lucci’s husband, passed away in March 2022 – he was 84. It’s just so sweet how they met, working at a hotel together! And can you believe it? They were engaged after just three weeks! They were clearly meant to be. They got married in September 1969, and it was nearly 53 years of happiness. It’s just… a love story, honestly!

She and the Austrian-born writer and producer shared two children Andreas and Liza.

Huber managed Lucci for a large part of her career and also ran Pine Valley Productions, the company they co-founded, which was named after the setting of the TV show All My Children.

Susan Lucci began playing the character Erica Kane in 1970 and continued in the role until the television show All My Children concluded in 2011. She was known for portraying Erica as a spirited and lively character.
