While the 60th anniversary of Star Trek hasn’t been ideal, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds offers a chance for Paramount Skydance to turn things around for the iconic sci-fi series. Season 4 of the prequel, consisting of 10 episodes, will premiere on Paramount+ on July 23rd and will be the show’s last.
The year 2024 got off to a hopeful start for Star Trek fans with the debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on January 15th. The show featured acclaimed actors Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti alongside a talented new cast. Unfortunately, Paramount+ canceled the series by the end of March. While season two is still planned for 2027, the story will conclude with the cadets finishing only their second year at the Academy.
Despite initial hopes, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy didn’t attract many viewers and faced negativity online. Its cancellation is significant because it means there are currently no new Star Trek shows being made – a first in almost ten years. With both Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ending in 2027, the franchise seems poised for a period of inactivity.
Yet, there could be good news on the horizon that will shed light on Star Trek‘s future.
Star Trek Is Quiet Until Strange New Worlds Season 4 Premieres
Things have been quiet in the world of Star Trek lately. The biggest news was the trailer for season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which was revealed at CCXP Mexico in April. With the premiere of the new season not until July, Paramount and Skydance are currently working on future Star Trek movies and shows in private.
The 60th anniversary of Star Trek is being celebrated in many ways across the fandom. Star Trek comics are still popular, with new digital comics appearing on WEBTOONS. The largest Star Trek convention, STLV: Trek to Vegas, is scheduled for early August. Plus, there’s a wealth of Star Trek podcasts available, often featuring appearances by favorite actors from the series.
Most fans focus on the original Star Trek TV shows and movies – these are considered the core of the franchise and what makes up official Star Trek canon. Currently, Paramount+ has two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and one season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy still to release.
Paramount Skydance officially revealed a new Star Trek movie is in the works at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. This appears to be the film previously reported to be directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Importantly, this new Star Trek won’t be connected to any of the earlier Star Trek shows or films.
It’s not surprising that fans are cautiously optimistic about new Star Trek movies, as Paramount has made similar promises in the past that didn’t pan out. Many see Star Trek as a TV series first and foremost, so people are more focused on the future of the shows currently streaming on Paramount+.
Star Trek Can Still Save Its 60th Anniversary Year
Don’t expect much news about Star Trek movies or TV shows for the next few months. However, that could change in July, potentially making the rest of Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary year more exciting. San Diego Comic-Con, which is when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut, is a good bet for announcements. Paramount+ has held Star Trek panels there in the past, and it’s likely they’ll do so again this year.
William Shatner suggested at Liverpool Comic Con that Paramount is planning a major Star Trek event at San Diego Comic-Con, but he won’t be there. If he’s correct, we can expect some significant news about the future of Star Trek – including both TV shows and movies – in July. Paramount is also expected to commemorate Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary at the convention.
Expect some buzz around the final seasons of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds at San Diego Comic-Con. Paramount+ might share updates on the future of Star Trek on TV, and we could finally learn if Alex Kurtzman is stepping down as the head of the Star Trek TV franchise and who will take over as executive producer.
Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will continue airing into September and will be the last new Star Trek show released in 2026. However, fans can also expect potential announcements at New York Comic Con in October, as Paramount often uses the event to share Star Trek news. They also frequently make announcements at CCXP Brazil in December.
It’s a little worrying that we haven’t heard much about Star Trek lately. Fans are understandably anxious about the plans Paramount Skydance’s new leadership has for the franchise. However, Star Trek has a long and successful 60-year history, and it’s likely to continue. Hopefully, the next six months will bring a clearer and more exciting vision for the future of Star Trek.
