Dexter: Resurrection Villain Actor Was “Honored” To Create Disappointing Major Franchise First For Dexter Morgan

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the first season of Dexter: New Blood. The show took the franchise in a new direction, and one actor said they were thrilled to be a part of it.

The Dexter series centers around Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a man who leads a double life: he works as a blood spatter analyst for the police, but secretly hunts down and kills criminals who have avoided punishment. The show originally aired from 2006 to 2013 and has expanded with three additional series: New Blood, a prequel called Original Sin, and Resurrection.

Eric Stonestreet, who played Al Walker (also known as Rapunzel) in season one of Dexter: Resurrection, recently spoke with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant. Stonestreet’s character was unique in the Dexter franchise—he was the first to survive an encounter with Dexter Morgan, even after openly admitting to his own crimes. The actor says he’s proud to have that distinction.

ScreenRant asks Al/Rapunzel: You managed to stay off Dexter Morgan’s radar for a whole season – a first for any serial killer he’s pursued. How did it feel to succeed, and what was your strategy for avoiding him?

Honestly, what really drew me to the project was the writing – it was just so good. And when they told me my character got away with it in the end, my actor brain immediately started wondering what that meant for the future, you know? Apparently, I’m the first one to ever get that ending on the show – the crew told me nobody else had! It’s a real honor, and it’s been a blast seeing all the online discussions about whether my character was actually outsmarting Dexter, or what the writers were thinking. I love that people are debating it and coming up with their own interpretations – that’s exactly what we wanted, and I really enjoyed being a part of it.

Al Walker appears to be a normal family man, but he’s secretly a serial killer who strangles women in parks and collects their ponytails as keepsakes. Dexter goes undercover to investigate a group of killers, including Al, and plans to eliminate them all. However, when Dexter prepares to kill Al, Al unexpectedly leaves town to go back home to Wisconsin.

While it’s not yet certain if James Remar will be back for season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, his character, Harry Stonestreet, represents an unresolved issue that Dexter typically tries to avoid. Remar himself enjoyed appearing in season 1, suggesting a return is likely, especially since Stonestreet’s story isn’t finished and no one ever truly gets away from Dexter Morgan. Uma Thurman and other new, notorious serial killers are also confirmed to appear in the upcoming season.

Dexter: Resurrection is available to watch on Paramount+.
