Be warned, this article contains spoilers for season 5, episode 8 of For All Mankind. For All Mankind is a science fiction series that presents a different take on the space race. Recently, the show has added new depth to its title. Since 2019, Apple TV has been exploring a world where the Soviet Union beat the United States to the moon in the late 1960s.
Although this change might seem small, the show proposes that it would have pushed America to reach the next big achievement more quickly, allowing it to regain its leadership on the world stage. Ultimately, the show examines how this affects humanity’s overall view of space exploration and its future.
The phrase echoes the famous words spoken by Neil Armstrong when he first stepped on the moon: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Both the original quote and this new version highlight space’s role in human progress and the sense of togetherness it creates as we explore the vastness beyond Earth.
For All Mankind Just Gave New Meaning To The Title
The show For All Mankind jumps forward in time with each season, covering about ten years. Because of this, while season one took place in the late 1960s and 70s, the current fifth season is now set in the 2010s, bringing the story closer to present day.
As a movie critic, I’ve seen a lot of space adventures, but the reality is quickly becoming even more fantastic than fiction. After the initial thrill of the Moon landing, technology exploded. We didn’t just visit the Moon, we stayed – building habitats and then pushing even further, all the way to Mars. Now, with a thriving colony of 5,000 people on the Red Planet, the big question driving these pioneers isn’t just can we go further, but are we alone? The search for life beyond Earth has become the central mission, and honestly, it’s the most exciting story ever.
In season 5, episode 8 of For All Mankind, Kelly Baldwin and her team make a historic landing on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. This event gives the show’s title a deeper resonance as Kelly shares the story of her father, Ed Baldwin. Years earlier, Ed was poised to be the first person to walk on the Moon, but he chose to cancel the mission because of safety risks. Kelly brought with her a small plaque her father had kept since then, originally intended to be left on the lunar surface.
The plaque features the date of the landing and the phrase, “For all mankind.” While this originally celebrated the historic 1969 Moon landing, when Kelly places it on Titan, it signifies a much larger idea – linking all of humanity’s space exploration, from its very first major achievement, forward in time.
For All Mankind’s Focus On The Space Race Has Evolved
The phrase originally aimed to inspire people by demonstrating what could be accomplished through concentrated effort and commitment. While that meaning remains true within the show, the mission itself has broadened. Now, the focus extends to discovering life elsewhere in the universe and establishing settlements on other planets.
It’s no longer enough to just visit space and bring back souvenirs. Now, we’re starting to think about building life on other planets and searching for signs that life already exists there.
For All Mankind is a truly inspiring show that motivates viewers to pursue ambitious goals and never give up. Although it’s a work of fiction, the series delivers powerful messages and possesses a genuine emotional core that’s rare on television. It achieves this in a remarkable way.
