Production on Matt Reeves’ sequel has been a long time coming. While Warner Bros. has given the director a lot of creative freedom, fans have been eagerly awaiting news about who would star in the film. Now that filming has begun, Reeves has officially revealed the main cast.
The movie features a mix of familiar actors from the first film, along with some exciting new faces joining the cast. Keep reading to discover who’s starring and what characters they’ll be playing in the dangerous world of Gotham City.
Robert Pattinson Returns as Bruce Wayne and Batman
As expected, Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman, much to the excitement of both fans and critics. He recently told Deadline he’s read the script for the sequel, written by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, and described it as “extraordinary.” He believes the new film will be truly unique and special.
Pattinson hinted that Reeves is being ambitious with the story for the next film, which is great news for fans of the first one. The original movie already took a chance by offering a three-hour, detective-style take on Batman that was unlike anything audiences had seen before.
Jeffrey Wright Fires Up the Bat Signal Again as Jim Gordon
Jeffrey Wright’s portrayal of Jim Gordon was praised when The Batman came out in 2022. He offered a fresh take on the character compared to Gary Oldman’s version in The Dark Knight Trilogy, depicting Gordon as a partner on equal footing with a Batman who was still learning the ropes. Wright and Robert Pattinson had strong chemistry on screen, and fans are excited to see how their dynamic evolves in the next film.
I’m really excited about what’s coming up for my character, Gordon, in the new movie! The director, Matt, is a fantastic storyteller, and I’ve heard little bits and pieces about the script. Honestly, I haven’t read it yet, so I can’t say much for sure. But everything I have heard sounds amazing, and I have total faith in Matt’s vision for Gotham. I’m confident it’ll be a really rewarding role for me, and something audiences will truly enjoy.
Fresh From Taking Over the Gotham Underworld, Colin Farrell is Back As The Penguin
Those who loved Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the Penguin in The Batman will be happy to learn he’s returning for the sequel. However, his part won’t be any larger than it was in the first film. Farrell told The Hollywood Reporter in September 2025 that he actually has an even smaller role this time around, but he’s perfectly fine with that. He’s read the script and says it’s more intense, frightening, and has higher stakes than the original, and he’s looking forward to seeing it come to life.
I was really relieved to see so much more of Colin Farrell’s Penguin after The Batman! Thankfully, he got his own show, The Penguin, on HBO in 2024. It was amazing – eight episodes diving deep into Gotham’s criminal world after that huge flood. Honestly, Farrell was incredible in it, and it was so well-deserved when he got nominated for an Emmy, even with all that makeup he had to wear!
Andy Serkis Will Serve Master Bruce Once Again as Alfred Pennyworth
Alfred Pennyworth’s portrayal in The Batman sparked debate because it differed significantly from previous versions, like those played by Michael Gough, Michael Caine, or even Jeremy Irons in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This Alfred wasn’t a warm, fatherly figure; he was presented more as a stern, military-like uncle.
Despite some limitations, Andy Serkis managed to create genuinely touching moments between Alfred and Bruce, and fans are eager to see him explore that connection further in the next film. Serkis has a lot on his plate, though, as he’s not only starring in The Batman: Part II, but will also be directing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum soon.
The Winter Soldier Comes to Gotham in the Shape of Sebastian Stan
Matt Reeves has added a seasoned superhero actor to the cast of his upcoming film. Reports surfaced in January 2026 that Sebastian Stan, known for playing Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) in numerous Marvel projects, was being considered for the role of Harvey Dent, Gotham City’s tragic District Attorney. Reeves officially confirmed Stan’s involvement on May 14th, though he kept the specific character a secret.
As most comic book fans know, Stan isn’t likely just playing a lawyer from Gotham City. He’s playing Harvey Dent, famously known as the villain Two-Face, who has appeared in two previous Batman movies – played by Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever and Aaron Eckhart in The Dark Knight. It’s probable that the filmmakers are planning for Stan to play the character for a while, but it’s also possible he’ll only be Harvey Dent in Part II, with the story of his transformation into Two-Face being saved for a later movie.
Scarlett Johansson is also Swapping Black Widow for a Mystery Bat-role
It seems Matt Reeves was heavily inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe while working on The Batman: Part II, as he’s cast another well-known Marvel actress in the sequel. The actress, currently Hollywood’s highest-paid, has joined the cast, though her character remains a secret. Given her fame as Black Widow in ten Marvel films, it’s likely she’ll have a significant role.
When rumors first surfaced about Johansson joining the film, many believed she’d be a romantic interest for Bruce Wayne who would turn out to be a villain. However, director Reeves announced her casting on May 14th with a GIF from her movie Under the Skin, showing her with dark hair and a mysterious look. This made many fans think she’s actually playing Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent’s potentially dangerous wife, a key character from the famous Long Halloween storyline.
Charles Dance Will Bring His Customary Gravitas to an As-Yet-Unrevealed Part
A well-known British actor shared a Game of Thrones GIF of his famous character, Tywin Lannister, appearing from the shadows, with the caption “Out of the shadows.” This immediately led fans to speculate he’d been cast as a villain – a role he’s played many times before. Now, everyone’s wondering which wicked character the actor, also known for Frankenstein, will portray.
The most persistent rumor about Barry Keoghan’s role in The Batman: Part II isn’t that he’ll play a famous Batman villain. Instead, reports suggest he’s been cast as Harvey Dent’s father, Christopher. While the character is typically portrayed as an abusive alcoholic in the comics, he doesn’t appear often. This has led some fans to speculate that “Christopher Dent” might be connected to the mysterious Court of Owls – a storyline many believe would be more exciting than him simply playing a troubled father.
Brian Tyree Henry is Making His Second Pit-Stop in Gotham City
Director Matt Reeves announced the casting of Brian Tyree Henry (known for his role in the show Atlanta) in The Batman: Part II with a simple message: “Welcome to the party, man.” Henry has become a highly acclaimed actor over the past ten years, appearing in critically praised films like Causeway and If Beale Street Could Talk, blockbuster superhero movies such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Eternals, and respected television series like Dope Thief. Interestingly, this won’t be Henry’s first time working in the world of Gotham City.
Fans noticed Henry played a minor character in the 2019 film Joker, and are speculating about his role in The Batman: Part II. However, both Joker and Matt Reeves’ Batman movies exist in separate universes, meaning Henry won’t necessarily reprise the same character. This opens the possibility he could be playing Detective Harvey Bullock – Gotham’s cynical, unkempt, but secretly good-hearted cop who dislikes vigilantes – a role many fans have already suggested.
Acclaimed German Star Sebastian Koch Has Been Cast in an Undisclosed Role
I was completely shocked when Keanu Reeves announced Sebastian Koch as a new cast member! It’s a bit unexpected because, while he’s an incredible actor – I loved him in The Lives of Others – he hasn’t really done a lot of big Hollywood films. Aside from a role on Homeland a few years back, he’s mostly been working in Germany. He did try a blockbuster once, playing the villain in A Good Day to Die Hard, but it didn’t seem to stick. So, seeing him join this project is a really exciting surprise!
It’s unclear exactly how Reeves convinced the talented actor Koch to return to Hollywood for this project. Like the other new cast members, Koch’s role is still a secret. Reeves recently posted “Locked and loaded for Gotham,” which might hint that Koch’s character will be skilled with weapons. Alternatively, there are rumors about the inclusion of Dr. Amadeus Arkham in the film, and Koch could potentially play that part.
Jayme Lawson Will Enjoy Her Third Appearance as Gotham City Mayor Bella Reál
Jayme Lawson is becoming an important part of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe, and she’ll continue that role in The Batman: Part II. She first appeared as mayoral candidate Bella Reál in The Batman and later returned for two episodes of The Penguin series, and this will be her third time playing the character.
She’s back, this time as the newly elected Mayor, and we’re hoping for the best – being in charge of Gotham City is incredibly dangerous. Just look at what happened to previous mayors: Don Mitchell Jr. was brutally attacked (as seen in The Batman), and Anthony Garcia was killed in an explosion by Bane (The Dark Knight Rises).
