With the eleventh episode of Marshals, Taylor Sheridan delves into a side of Montana life that his previous series, Yellowstone, didn’t fully explore over its five seasons. Yellowstone followed the Dutton family, led by Kevin Costner as John Dutton, and centered on their lives running the massive Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest ranch of its kind in the United States, in Paradise Valley.
The first series concluded with Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) selling the family ranch. Now, in the new show Marshals, Kayce deals with the ongoing consequences of his family’s history as he begins a career as a US Marshal, following the death of his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille). While working in a harsh environment, he encounters a new and unexpected adversary, different from anything the Duttons faced in Yellowstone.
Yellowstone Finally Shows Montana’s Brutal Cold In Marshals Episode 11
The episode “On Thin Ice” forces Kayce to confront a dangerous enemy that the show hadn’t previously focused on. He’s tracking an escaped convict, Neil Lamb, while the previous episode ended with Peter Calvin realizing Kayce is working independently in the mountains.
Garrett is critically injured after being caught in a fire at Kayce’s barn. When John Dutton learns that a former ranch hand, marked by a distinctive brand, has broken free, he leaves Garrett’s side to pursue him. This former employee intends to expose John’s secrets, so Kayce goes after him, tracking him into the mountains.
The episode highlights how cold it is in the mountains, and Cal quickly feels the effects as he and Kayce track the escaped prisoner. To gain an advantage, Lamb reveals some of the Dutton family’s hidden past to Cal after he falls into icy water, but Pete later chooses to ignore this information.
Honestly, I was shocked when Garrett died. I really thought it would be the US Marshals team leader, or even Neil – Dutton originally planned to just get rid of him! But no, it ended up being Garrett, and it was so sad to see his lungs give out from the injuries he suffered in the fire. It was a really tough moment in the episode.
The latest episode of Marshals really highlights just how harsh Montana’s winter weather can be, particularly if you’re not prepared. While Kayce remains hopeful, Lamb sabotages their efforts to stay warm by damaging their shelter and fire, making survival much more difficult. This is a stark reality of the situation that hasn’t been fully addressed until now.
The Cold Is Rare For John Dutton’s Family Despite Yellowstone’s Setting
For almost 150 years, the Dutton family has lived in a region known for its harsh winters. Yet, the show Yellowstone doesn’t often depict the most brutal conditions. While John, Kayce, Beth (Kelly Reilly), and Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) deal with challenges like land developers, legal battles, and government interference, the series surprisingly avoids showing how the extreme cold impacts them, even though they have access to modern comforts.
While the main series is known for its warmer setting, the prequels, 1883 and 1923, do feature colder climates. These were the first spinoffs, followed by Marshals and Dutton Ranch, which will debut on Paramount+ on May 15th. Specifically, the limited series 1883, detailing the earliest days of the ranch, shows the harsh winter conditions as the biggest challenge faced by the settlers traveling the Oregon Trail.
The second season of 1923 delves deeper into the harsh realities of winter in Montana. Led by Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), the family faces a truly brutal season. Like Yellowstone before it, the show highlights how the wild landscape attracts dangers – not just from the elements, but from predators as well.
Despite the cold weather, it mostly served as a pretty background detail. The episode features a poignant Christmas morning scene where Beth shares a first-time experience with her mother, Evelyn. However, the Dutton family was also dealing with a difficult situation that day. While the scene takes place in winter, the weather itself doesn’t pose any immediate danger to them.
Okay, so episode 11 of Marshals with Kayce and Cal wasn’t just about creating tension – it actually delivered something really powerful. It finally showed us the brutal cold of the present-day setting, and really pushed Kayce to his absolute limit, making his survival feel earned. Plus, it threw in a curveball with Neil Lamb seeing Kayce seemingly dead under the ice, which just added another layer of suspense.
