Mortal Kombat II brings one of the video game’s toughest fighters to the big screen.
Mortal Kombat II is a fantasy action movie based on the popular video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. It’s the fourth film in the Mortal Kombat live-action series and a sequel to the 2021 movie. Written by Jeremy Slater, the story centers on Johnny Cage (Karl Urban) teaming up with other warriors to stop Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), a powerful ruler who threatens the future of Earthrealm.
Simon McQuoid, the director of Mortal Kombat, had many ideas for characters to include in a potential sequel even before the 2021 film was released, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He specifically mentioned Baraka (played by CJ Bloomfield) as a character he was particularly eager to feature, as the character is popular from the video game series.
Adding Baraka to the cast was a smart choice for the director. Many fans consider him a highlight of Mortal Kombat II. His fight with Johnny Cage is one of the film’s most exciting scenes, and it’s been praised for successfully blending action with humor. Baraka also reappears briefly at the end of the movie.
McQuoid shared that it took a lot of effort to adapt the character of Baraka and his scenes. Finding the right actor took months; he needed someone who could be both intimidating and charming, balancing the character’s aggression with humor. When he met Bloomfield, he immediately knew Bloomfield was perfect for the role, ending his search.
P.J. Voeten, an assistant director on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, was the one who suggested Bloomfield for the part. Bloomfield had previously appeared as a member of Chris Hemsworth’s biker gang in the film and quickly made a strong impression during his audition.
After Bryan Bloomfield joined the cast of Mortal Kombat II, the director and his team spent several months designing the large fight scene in the Tarkatan village. This scene features Johnny Cage constantly provoking Baraka and is one of the movie’s most important action sequences. The director wanted the village to feel like a real, lived-in place, not just a backdrop for a fight. To achieve this, the production team included specific details about the village and its people, even casting child actors to play Tarkatan children, making the scene more believable.
Mortal Kombat II is playing in theaters now.
