Closer Look at the Late Virgil Abloh’s 1-of-1 Mercedes G63 AMG

Summary

  • Mercedes-Benz AMG has officially created a one-of-one custom G63 AMG as a special tribute to the late Virgil Abloh and his iconic automotive artwork
  • The vehicle honors Abloh’s famous “Project Geländewagen” concept, featuring an incredible factory paint job meticulously designed to look like a sanded-down, unfinished prototype
  • Unlike the original stripped-down art piece, this 1-of-1 edition was reimagined specifically for daily driving on the streets of Chicago, where Abloh’s architectural journey began

Virgil Abloh, a creative force who blended fashion, architecture, and car design, left a lasting mark on car culture. Now, Mercedes-Benz AMG has honored his legacy with a unique, drivable tribute: a custom-built G63 AMG. This one-of-a-kind vehicle pays homage to Abloh’s innovative car designs, including his influential “Project Geländewagen” concept from 2020.

Okay, so this G-Wagon is seriously wild. When I first saw it, I thought it was a prototype, like they’d just pulled it off the assembly line before painting. It looks totally unfinished, with what appears to be sanded panels and all sorts of imperfections. But get this – it’s supposed to look like that! Mercedes-Benz AMG did an insane amount of work to create this finish. It’s all part of the design, inspired by the artist Abloh’s style – that ‘work-in-progress’ look. It’s a really cool way to bring a raw, industrial feel to such a luxurious vehicle. It’s like they took a powerhouse SUV and intentionally made it look unfinished, and it totally works!

The first “Project Geländewagen” was a bare-bones, racing-focused vehicle, lacking even mirrors or turn signals. This new version, however, was designed to be a practical car for everyday use in Chicago. Returning to the city where Virgil Abloh first studied architecture and began his successful career, this vehicle showcases his idea of blending architecture and automotive design, becoming a moving tribute against the backdrop of Chicago’s famous skyline.

This unique Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG was created as a special tribute to the designer’s long partnership with the car company and will not be sold. L’Art de Automobile shared a detailed look online, confirming that this one-of-a-kind vehicle will stay with the designer’s personal collection, keeping his creative legacy alive on the roads where it began.
