Marvel’s new series, VisionQuest, starring Paul Bettany as the android hero Vision, will premiere on Disney+ on October 14th. Disney announced the date at a recent presentation, confirming plans for the show which have been in the works since October 2022. The series brings back Paul Bettany in his celebrated role and also marks the return of James Spader as Ultron, a character he hasn’t played since the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The casting of Ross Spader as Ultron significantly strengthens the show’s potential. Having Ultron alongside Vision – the artificial being he created, who later rebelled – creates a complex relationship with plenty of backstory to fuel an entire series. Since WandaVision, Bettany’s Vision has become one of the most thought-provoking characters in the Marvel universe, grappling with themes of memory, identity, and consciousness. Bringing Ultron back into the mix is a bold move that suggests VisionQuest will aim for the same emotional depth and complexity that made WandaVision unique within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

October 14th feels like a significant milestone for Paul Bettany. While his character, Vision, has been in several Marvel Cinematic Universe projects since first appearing in Age of Ultron, WandaVision was the first time Vision was truly the heart of the story. Now, VisionQuest takes that even further, giving Bettany a whole series focused on a character who, considering the MCU’s storyline, shouldn’t even be possible.
