ITV’s new four-part drama, Believe Me, features Line of Duty star Daniel Mays playing the role of John Worboys, a notorious black cab rapist. Viewers who have already watched the series are flooding Instagram with praise for Mays’ performance, and many are saying similar things about how convincingly he portrays the character.
One fan offered the highest praise, saying they were genuinely frightened by the show – and meant it as a compliment. Another viewer called the series deeply disturbing, but praised the actor Mays, calling their performance incredible.
Many viewers struggled with seeing Danny Mays portray a villain. One fan praised his acting, saying, “You’re amazing! I just don’t like you as the bad guy!” Another commented that the role must have been emotionally challenging for Mays, but still acknowledged it was a fantastic performance.
The series centers on Sarah, Carrie, and Laila—the women targeted by John’s terrible crimes—and their determined fight for justice, even though the Metropolitan Police struggled with the case.

The task they were given was incredibly challenging, requiring deeply researched, detailed, and emotionally honest performances – and, most importantly, a willingness to be completely vulnerable. While I didn’t see their rehearsals, I was profoundly moved by all three actresses when I first saw the show.
Working with director Julia Ford on this project was truly special, and it beautifully honors the struggles of the courageous women it portrays. My sincere congratulations to Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Aasiya Shah, and Miriam Petche – it was a privilege to work alongside all of you.
