If you enjoyed The Vampire Diaries, you should definitely watch this new crime movie that’s currently popular on Netflix.
The 2022 TV movie, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story, tells the chilling true story of Melanie McGuire, a nurse who murdered her husband. The film details the horrific way she treated his remains and the events of her trial. Candice King, known for her role in The Vampire Diaries, plays Melanie McGuire in this Lifetime true crime movie, five years after the series ended.
According to Netflix’s TUDUM website, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story was watched 4.1 million times last week, making it the fifth most popular English-language movie worldwide between January 12th and 18th, 2026. This is the first week the movie has appeared in Netflix’s global Top 10, and it’s competing with newer original content on the streaming service.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s new movie, The Rip, is currently the most popular title on Netflix. People We Meet on Vacation holds steady at number two in its second week in the top ten. Rounding out the top five are Our Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 at number three and KPop Demon Hunters at number four, with Suitcase Killer also performing well.
As a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries, I always loved watching Candice King’s journey as Caroline Forbes. She started as the sometimes-frustrating, clueless best friend, but really blossomed into this awesome, powerful vampire – and a mom, too! Beyond TVD, she’s been in a bunch of other projects like We Were Liars, After We Collided, Deadgirl, and Juno. And it was fantastic to see her bring Caroline back for the The Originals and Legacies spin-offs – she really made that character her own.
The cast of “Suitcase Killer” features Michael Roark, Wendie Malick, and Jackson Hurst. Nicole L. Thompson directed the film, and also directed the 2023 TV movie “You’re Not Supposed to Be Here,” as well as several short films like “Harlem Blues” and “Between the Pages.”
The new Netflix movie, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story, adds to the platform’s collection of true crime content, highlighting the continued popularity of this genre.
