Elle Fanning and Callum Turner are among the stars appearing in a new family thriller directed by Karim Aïnouz. Titled Rosebush Pruning, the film will have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival next month as part of the competition lineup.
Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz worked from a screenplay by Efthimis Filippou, a frequent collaborator with director Yorgos Lanthimos. Filippou co-wrote several of Lanthimos’s acclaimed films, including The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Kinds of Kindness, and earlier works like Dogtooth and Alps.
With Rosebush Pruning, Filippou makes his directorial debut by adapting a well-regarded 1965 film by Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio. The original movie, Fists in the Pockets, tells the story of a young man with epilepsy who plans to kill his troubled family.

Filippou’s version of the story is set in Spain and follows four American siblings – played by Turner, Riley Keough, Jamie Bell, and Lukas Gage – who are living a secluded life funded by their family’s wealth.
The family starts to fall apart when Jack decides to move in with his girlfriend, and Ed learns what really happened to their mother. A new image from the film hints that Elle Fanning might play Jack’s girlfriend.

The cast is rounded out by Pamela Anderson, Tracy Letts and Elena Anaya.
Aïnouz expressed her enthusiasm for bringing her bold and flavorful script to the screen, explaining that it questions conventional ideas about family and male dominance. She also shared her admiration for the talented group of actors she’s working with (via Variety).
Berlinale director Tricia Tuttle lauded the film Rosebush Pruning, calling it a suspenseful thriller about a wealthy family whose hidden secrets begin to destroy them.

Originally, Kristen Stewart and Josh O’Connor were going to star in the film, but in 2024, they were replaced by Keough and Turner.
Director Aïnouz explained that he’s updating Marco Bellocchio’s groundbreaking 1965 film, Fists in the Pocket. He described the original as a hugely influential work in Italian cinema and shared his excitement about working with Efthimis to create a modern story about the decline of traditional families led by fathers.
I’m aiming for a story that’s both deeply moving and thought-provoking. It’s a lifelong dream to collaborate with this incredibly talented group of actors, whom I’ve always respected, to share this powerful and modern adaptation with audiences.
I’m super excited to hear that Rosebush Pruning is going to premiere at the Berlinale! It’s happening between February 12th and 22nd, which is awesome. They haven’t said when we’ll be able to see it everywhere else yet, but I’m definitely keeping an eye out!
