Last January, singer Jesy Nelson, formerly of the group Little Mix, and her boyfriend, rapper Zion Foster, shared exciting news: they were expecting identical twins. Their fans – a combined 10 million on Instagram – were thrilled.
However, that happiness quickly turned to heartbreak. Earlier this month, Jesy shared that her twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, were born prematurely and diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1). This condition causes increasing muscle weakness and can prevent the twins from being able to walk, talk, eat, or drink, potentially requiring constant care. Without treatment, their life expectancy could be limited to just two years.
Jesy’s mother, Janice White, was the first to notice that the girls weren’t developing as they should, even though health workers said they were doing well.
Every mother’s worst fear has come true, and things became even more heartbreaking when Jesy, 34, and Zion, 26, revealed they’ve split up just four months after getting engaged.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m hearing from sources close to Jesy and Zion that even though they’ve split romantically, they’re completely dedicated to raising their twin daughters together. Their priority, and it’s wonderful to see, is doing what’s best for their girls, and they’re committed to co-parenting as a united front.
Like any father would, the rapper remains optimistic that his daughters will overcome their health challenges. He even wrote them a poem, sharing it on Instagram, calling them his ‘two little warrior girls who already know how to fight’.

It’s unclear who initiated the breakup, but Jesy is now facing the challenges of raising her daughters on her own. While Zion has stated he’ll continue to support both her and his children, she’s preparing to be a single mother.
How will this all work in practice? Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, who are both eight months old, need constant, specialized care.
Jesy, who is estimated to be worth £6 million, has shared that her £3 million Essex home now feels more like a hospital ward due to the amount of medical equipment needed, like breathing machines and feeding tubes. She and her daughters also receive regular physiotherapy to help strengthen their weakening muscles.
Even though Jesy is facing personal challenges, she’s been very open about her daughters’ medical diagnoses and is working to make early testing for the condition available through the National Health Service. Finding the condition early can help slow down or even stop its progress. She’s also staying optimistic and prioritizing her daughters’ well-being.
This raises the question of how Zion plans to be a very involved father, as he’s stated he intends to be, if he and the mother are no longer a couple.
It’s difficult to be actively involved in your children’s lives when you don’t live with them. So, even though he means well, can this young rapper actually keep his promise to be a present father?
Zion is a rising R&B star in the UK, already working with international artists like Patoranking and Zlatan. But how will he juggle this quickly growing career – which began with recording rap songs at home – with the demands of being a full-time father to his two daughters, who both have significant disabilities?
It remains to be seen if he’ll be a consistently involved father, or just someone who visits when his work allows… but I truly hope he steps up for his daughters and Jesy.
It’s a common story: fathers promise to be actively involved after a separation – to share parenting responsibilities and be there for their kids – but often end up only appearing for special occasions, leaving the daily work of raising the children to the mother.

Sam Carlisle, a parent of a child with a rare genetic disorder and advocate for families in similar situations, cautioned that couples with disabled children experience a higher rate of separation and divorce after learning about Jesy and Zion’s decision to co-parent.
Honestly, hearing her say it just hit me. It’s like, you dream up this perfect family life, and then…poof, it’s gone, replaced by something completely different, something nobody warns you about. And those sweet girls… they’re going to need both their parents, completely united, to get through everything life throws at them. It’s terrifying, but they deserve that, you know? They deserve parents who will fight for them, together.
Zion, take note.
The rapper recently shared a touching poem for his daughters, expressing his desire to be a supportive and loving father. He revealed his biggest concern isn’t about their achievements, but rather about unconditionally accepting and loving them for who they are at this very moment, asking them directly how they are doing emotionally and mentally.
It’s not exactly a masterpiece, but let’s hope Zion can handle things. And we really hope Jesy doesn’t end up raising their children on her own.
