Jensen Ackles, known for his role in The Boys, recently shared if he still hopes to play Batman. This comes as James Gunn prepares to introduce the character into the new DC Universe with The Brave and the Bold. Ackles has long said he’d love to play Batman in a live-action film, and he’s already familiar with the role, having voiced Batman in multiple animated movies.
During an appearance with his Supernatural co-star Misha Collins at a convention in Las Vegas, Jared Ackles again expressed his desire to play Batman, calling it a “dream role,” according to a YouTube clip shared by @daniieLa1899.
While playing a DC superhero is a big goal, Ackles also expressed interest in portraying other iconic characters like Wyatt Earp and Robin Hood.
I definitely have a few roles I’d love to play. Someone mentioned Batman, and yes, that’s absolutely on the list! I also often think about roles like Wyatt Earp or Robin Hood – classic characters like that.
Jared Padalecki isn’t new to superhero shows. Before becoming famous as Dean Winchester in Supernatural, he played Jason Teague on Smallville.
Jensen Ackles first appeared as Red Hood in the DC animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood. He later went on to voice Batman himself in several other animated movies, including Batman: The Long Halloween, Legion of Super-Heroes, Justice League: Warworld, and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Two years after the end of the 15-season run of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles joined the cast of The Boys, a more mature and realistic superhero show on Prime Video, playing the character Soldier Boy. He will return as a main cast member for season 5 of The Boys, which will begin streaming on April 8th.
The last season of The Boys will include appearances by Jensen Ackles’ former Supernatural co-stars, Jim Cummings and Jared Padalecki.
Even after The Boys concludes, Jensen Ackles will continue playing Soldier Boy in the new series Vought Rising.
James Gunn successfully directed the Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, and then took on the challenge of relaunching the DC Universe. His first DC film, Superman, released in 2025, earned $616 million worldwide and received positive reviews, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an 83% approval score.
Following the success of his current project, Gunn will release Supergirl in June 2026 and then broaden the DC universe with other heroes, including Batman. The Brave and the Bold, a Batman-focused film, is still in the early stages of production, with the script currently being written, according to a recent announcement from the co-chair of DC Studios.
The Batman starring Robert Pattinson exists in its own universe, separate from the main DC Universe being created. James Gunn, who is leading the DC Universe, wants to avoid confusing audiences or overshadowing the planned 2027 sequel, The Batman: Part II, so the two versions of Batman will remain distinct.
A release date and cast for The Brave and the Bold haven’t been finalized, meaning Jensen Ackles still has a chance to play the superhero he’s hoping for.
