Speculation is building about who will play the Flash in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, and Gunn has responded to rumors, specifically those involving Grant Gustin. He recently clarified on social media that he hasn’t spoken with the former CW star about a role, effectively ending the gossip.
James Gunn responds to Grant Gustin DCU Flash casting rumors
On January 17th, one of the heads of DC Studios was online answering questions from fans when he came across a rumor about Grant Gustin potentially playing the Flash. The rumor started because the actor had recently changed his hair color, leading some to believe he might be preparing for a role in the new DC Universe.
After fans threatened to protest if Grant Gustin wasn’t reprising his role as The Flash, James Gunn responded on Threads, saying he hadn’t actually seen any riots despite the warnings. He also added that he likes Grant Gustin and isn’t sure why Elliot was brought into the conversation.
Grant Gustin recently clarified the speculation surrounding his new hair color. In a response on Instagram, he confirmed he’s always open to reprising his role as The Flash, but his current long, blonde hair is for a different, non-superhero project. He appreciated the excitement fans showed about the possibility of him returning to the role. (via Bleeding Cool News)
Gunn essentially ended the discussion by responding to a question about Grant’s hair color on Threads with, “I have no idea why Grant dyed his hair.”
While James Gunn and Grant Gustin have expressed admiration for each other’s work, they don’t have any plans to work together on a DC Universe project in the near future.
When asked about a similar claim back in March 2024, James Gunn said that Grant Gustin is a very skilled actor – currently appearing on Broadway, he noted – and won’t be overlooked despite not being in a DC project right now. Gunn added that he’d definitely be interested in collaborating with Gustin in the future.
