Katherine Ryan strongly criticized Brooklyn Beckham, calling him an ‘ungrateful child of privilege’ while defending his parents, David and Victoria Beckham.
The 42-year-old comedian was reacting to a surprising post made by Brooklyn Beckham, the oldest son of David and Victoria Beckham, where he publicly criticized his parents on Monday.
Brooklyn said he was deeply embarrassed when his mother unexpectedly took over his first dance at his 2022 wedding to Nicola Peltz, 31. He described it as the most uncomfortable and humiliating moment of his life.
He shared that he hadn’t talked to his family – parents and siblings – for over a year. He said the estrangement started when Victoria criticized him, calling him ‘evil,’ because of how he organized the seating at an event.
Katherine, a mom of four, came to the support of the 50-year-old football star and the 51-year-old Spice Girl on her podcast, ‘Telling Everybody Everything,’ this Tuesday.
I agree with David and Victoria Beckham. Having been a parent and having made mistakes when I was younger, I believe their son, Brooklyn, needs to mature a bit.

He grew up as the firstborn son in a very powerful and privileged family – almost like royalty, but with a more modern, relatable image. While it’s tough living under constant public scrutiny, it seems he hasn’t fully acknowledged both the downsides and the benefits of his upbringing. He hasn’t demonstrated the self-awareness to recognize how his experiences, both good and bad, have shaped who he is today.
My parents aren’t abusive. They express positive feelings towards me, whether genuinely or just for show, and they support my growth with various opportunities.
She also pointed out that many people with famous parents find it hard to achieve the same level of success – and often don’t surpass it.
The Canadian comedian, who lives in London with her family, then criticized Brooklyn Beckham’s career, highlighting that all his business ventures were made possible by his famous family name. She specifically mentioned his £1 million deal with Superdry in 2021 and his expensive cooking show during the pandemic, which reportedly cost £100,000 per episode.
She pointed out that he likely wouldn’t have been discovered as a model through typical means, like being spotted in a mall. Instead, she said he benefited from having connections – he was among the first of those known as ‘nepo babies’ – people who gained opportunities through family connections.
We saw him as a baby, brought to football games all the time. His name carries a lot of weight – it likely helped him land those deals, though he may not realize that.
‘Then he decides he wants to do photography, and we’ve all seen his photography work.’
She added: ‘I’m not seeing any of the gratitude in these posts.’

This move is a surprising change of heart for Katherine, considering her past criticism of David and Victoria Beckham. Just two months ago, she caused a public uproar on the show ‘Have I Got News For You’ when she used a derogatory term to refer to Victoria, playfully asking if it was permissible to say on air.
She has criticized David before, specifically regarding his role as an ambassador for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. She argued that celebrities shouldn’t profit from the event while also publicly supporting LGBTQ+ rights.
Katherine strongly denied Brooklyn’s surprising statement that Victoria had cancelled making Nicola’s wedding dress shortly before their 2022 wedding.
Brooklyn said that Nicola ended up rushing to get a custom Valentino dress at the very last minute. Apparently, reports about the dress said it took a year of discussions to design, including two trips Nicola made to Rome and fittings in both Miami and Los Angeles. Brooklyn questioned how this could have been a last-minute scramble when it seemed like they had a whole year to plan it.
Katherine didn’t believe Brooklyn when he said he was ‘humiliated’ by Victoria dancing with him during what should have been his first dance as a married man with his wife, Nicola.
What’s all this talk about twerking and grinding? It was strange to see Victoria Beckham ready to do that first dance – perhaps there was a mix-up, and she thought she was dancing with her mother.

‘I think it’s a little thin skinned to be, like, “I was humiliated”,’ she added.
Your mom is her own person, living her own life. It’s natural she’ll have feelings about you getting married, especially as her first child. So, if she wants to be close during your first dance, gets emotional, or even oversteps a bit with the wedding planning, that’s okay. Let her feel what she needs to feel – it doesn’t diminish your joy or make you look bad.
In that situation, the best thing to do is be understanding and acknowledge that your mother can be a little eccentric.
She went on to say she wasn’t convinced he – Brooklyn – truly understood the pain and suffering real people experience. While he’s formed his own opinions based on his life, and genuinely feels he’s been treated unfairly, that’s his perspective.
He’s always been a good person, but eventually, becoming truly independent and mature means learning to forgive your parents and understand their perspectives.
The comedian criticized a recent legal notice sent to his parents in Brooklyn. The letter asked them to stop mentioning him on social media and insisted all future communication go through his lawyers.
I understand why Brooklyn wants his family to be genuine, but if that’s important to him, he should probably avoid social media altogether, she explained.
Don’t write a legal letter you know will become public and worsen the situation. He’s requesting privacy, but doing so very publicly and dramatically.
Katherine explained that Brooklyn needs to recognize how challenging it’s been for him to grow up with so much public attention. She noted that his parents also faced similar difficulties while in the spotlight.
Brooklyn is used to attention, but his parents, Victoria and David, faced far more intense scrutiny. When Brooklyn was born, they were instantly overwhelmed by paparazzi, and had to learn how to raise a child in the public eye.
Be understanding with your parents. They did everything they could, so try to be gracious, even if you need some space. Asking for privacy publicly while still wanting a close relationship just doesn’t work – you can’t have it both ways.
