Many were surprised by the success of ‘Sinners,’ which became a worldwide hit thanks to its original story – something different from most recent popular movies. Director Ryan Coogler revealed that the unusual plot actually made it surprisingly difficult to get Michael B. Jordan to agree to star in the film.

This new movie, set during the Great Depression, tells the story of twin brothers who start a music club in Mississippi. Director Ryan Coogler recently shared how he nervously pitched the idea, especially because Michael B. Jordan was very busy. He described the pitch during an interview on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast.

Coogler explained he was diligently working on the script before reaching out to Jordan, not wanting to bother the actor prematurely. He didn’t want to just tell Jordan he had a project in mind without having something concrete to share, so he focused on finishing the screenplay first.

Those plans shifted when Jordan contacted him with a new project idea. Coogler remembers telling Jordan he wasn’t able to take it on at the moment. Jordan responded with frustration, questioning if Coogler was holding something back. It was then that Coogler shared the idea for ‘Sinners’.

He explained his idea, saying, “It’s a story about twins, set during menstruation, with a vampire element.” There was a long silence. He recalled being worried, thinking he’d lost the actor’s attention. But after a significant pause, the actor finally responded, “That sounds pretty interesting.”

Coogler finished writing the screenplay for ‘Sinners’ and showed it to Michael B. Jordan, which got the project officially started.
