How to Train Your Dragon 2 Replaces Djimon Hounsou as Main Villain

Universal Pictures is reportedly finding a new actor to play the villain, Drago Bludvist, in the upcoming live-action sequel to How to Train Your Dragon 2. This means a different actor than the one who voiced the character in the original animated movie will take on the role.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson cast as Drago in live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2

Universal Pictures is moving forward with a live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, and they’ve announced a new actor for the villainous Drago. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will be taking on the role, as the story adapts from the animated films to a live-action format.

Drago Bludvist first appeared as the primary villain in the animated movie How to Train Your Dragon 2. He’s a cold-blooded dragon hunter who wants to dominate dragons, not live peacefully with them. The original animated character was voiced by Djimon Hounsou, so casting Ólafsson in the role is a significant shift for fans of the series.

The next movie continues the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless in a world where dragons and humans are finally at peace, but things are quickly evolving. The story delves into Hiccup’s relationship with his mother, Valka, who plays a key role as a villain named Drago tries to take over with brute force.

The sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, features many of the original actors, including Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, and Julian Dennison. Cate Blanchett will also be back to voice the character of Valka, a role she previously played in the animated movies.

Actor Ólafsson, who has appeared in Severance and Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, is bringing a compelling take to the villain character. As production gains momentum and key actors are confirmed, the new How to Train Your Dragon film is generating a lot of excitement. The 2025 live-action adaptation of the story was a major success, earning over $636 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo).
