I was watching the first episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and it was interesting that they didn’t actually give a specific Stardate right away. They just told us it was ‘Fifteen Years Later’ after showing young Caleb Mir getting separated from his mom, Anisha. It’s set sometime after Star Trek: Discovery ended, but they haven’t said exactly how much time has passed.
Jörg Hillebrand, a researcher on Star Trek: Picard season 3, has determined when the new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set in time, and the answer is unexpected. By translating a file read by Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) about Commander Lura Thok (Gina Yashere), Hillebrand was able to pinpoint the exact timeframe for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy based on Lura’s age and birthdate. Commander Lura Thok was born in 3145, and is currently 50 years old. This means the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy starts in 3195. That’s four years after the finale of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, which was set in 3191. Commander Michael Burnham initially traveled to the 32nd century in 3188, and the USS Discovery followed in 3189. The events of Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3 through 5 span the years 3188 to 3191.
I’ve been digging into Caleb Mir’s history, and it’s fascinating! Records show he was 21 years old back in 3195, meaning he was born in 3174. That makes the opening events of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – the prologue, specifically – take place around 3180. It’s also heartbreaking to learn that Captain Ake, the one who brought Caleb to the Academy, resigned from Starfleet that same year. He did so because he strongly disagreed with the Federation’s decision to separate a mother from her child – a really powerful reason to leave.
Information from record 3195 helps us determine Captain Ake’s birthdate. Knowing that the half-Lanthanite Starfleet Academy Chancellor is 422 years old, we can calculate that Nahla was born in 2773, during the 28th century. Captain Ake likely served in Starfleet during significant events like the Temporal Wars of the 29th and 30th centuries, and The Burn in the 31st century.
It made sense to think Star Trek: Starfleet Academy would start around 3192, shortly after Star Trek: Discovery. However, setting it in 3195 creates more time between the two shows. Unless Star Trek: Starfleet Academy specifically shows something different happening in the present, Captain Ake’s series takes place after a potential sixth season of Star Trek: Discovery and further adventures aboard the USS Discovery-A.
