Prime Video has a hidden gem: a really shocking and scandalous thriller that didn’t get much attention when it came out in late 2025. Even though it starred well-known actors like Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke from House of the Dragon, and had a compelling story, it didn’t perform well on the streaming charts. But now, with shows like Heated Rivalry being popular on HBO Max and a renewed interest in mature thrillers – thanks to movies like The Voyeurs, The Handmaiden, and The Hunting Wives – it’s the perfect time to watch all six episodes of The Girlfriend on Prime Video.

This series, adapted from Michelle Frances’ novel, features Olivia Cooke as Cherry, and tells the story of a young woman whose relationship with Daniel (Laurie Davidson) is complicated by his family. While Daniel’s father (Waleed Zuaiter) welcomes Cherry, his mother, Laura (Robin Wright), is extremely overprotective and controlling. The cast also includes Karen Henthorn, Tanya Moddie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Anna Chancellor, and Naomi Sheldon. The show follows a relationship strained by family dynamics.
Laura seems to have a perfect life, but things begin to fall apart when her son introduces his girlfriend, Cherry. Laura immediately suspects Cherry is using her son to get ahead, but she wonders if her concerns are simply unfounded paranoia.
When The Girlfriend came out in late 2025, it was generally well-received by critics. It currently has an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers who watched the show gave it a 71% score. The series also has a 7.2 rating on IMDb, indicating similar positive feedback.
Will ‘The Girlfriend’ Return for Season 2?

While The Girlfriend didn’t become a massive streaming hit, it still performed well enough to appear on the charts. Unfortunately, Prime Video doesn’t share specific viewership numbers, so it’s hard to say exactly how popular the show was. Fans are now hoping Amazon will renew it for a second season based on its performance.
As of today, it’s still unknown if The Girlfriend will get a second season. While author Michelle Frances has written other books similar to The Girlfriend, none of them follow directly after the story we’ve already seen. This means a second season would have to create a new storyline, rather than adapting an existing book. However, with the dramatic cliffhanger at the end of Season 1, fans are eager to find out what happens next with Daniel and Cherry’s relationship.

I absolutely loved the ending of The Girlfriend – it was such a twist and left me completely wanting more! But honestly, I’m a little worried about a Season 2. These days, we get everything instantly, and it feels like people have forgotten how great it is to be left with a good mystery. That finale was perfect, and I’m not sure another season would do it justice. Maybe it’s best to leave things as they are and let the ending stay a shocking, open question. It’s a risk, but preserving that mystery could be the best thing for the show.
