The new Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, features a pairing similar to the popular dynamic between Sandor ‘The Hound’ Clegane and Arya Stark, according to creator Ira Parker. The series, which premieres on HBO this weekend, is much more focused than the original show, following the adventures of Ser Duncan ‘Dunk’ the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire, Aegon ‘Egg’ Targaryen (Dextor Sol Ansell). The story primarily centers on their relationship – they argue just as much as they enjoy each other’s company.
While promoting his book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Parker spoke with GamesRadar+ and other news outlets during a group interview.
This story isn’t about zombies or complex political intrigue, and it doesn’t follow many different characters. It focuses on just two: Dunk and his young apprentice, Egg. Their relationship is similar to pairings we’ve seen in Game of Thrones, like the Hound and Arya, or Brienne and Pod.
George R.R. Martin excels at creating unexpected and charming pairings, and those interactions were always the highlights of the original show for me. This new series focuses entirely on one of those unlikely duos, and it’s really enjoyable. We hope audiences will love it too.
In season two of Game of Thrones, the Hound is captured by the Brotherhood Without Banners, which leads to an unlikely connection with Arya. He takes her hostage, planning to return her to her family for a reward. As they travel through the Riverlands, they begin to overcome their initial animosity and form a complex, almost familial bond. Meanwhile, in season four, Jaime Lannister tasks Brienne of Tarth and her squire, Podrick Payne, with finding Sansa Stark after she flees King’s Landing. Their journey together strengthens their loyalty and creates a powerful partnership as they face numerous challenges.
Dunk and Egg’s Adventures Aren’t Stopping Any Time Soon

HBO
HBO apparently started planning a second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as early as ten months before the first season even aired, hoping to continue the story of Dunk and Egg. Like the dynamic between the Hound and Arya, their relationship seems to have the potential for a long-running story.

The first season of the show covers George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight completely. Plans are also in the works to adapt the follow-up stories, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. Excitingly, Martin has also written brief outlines for 10 to 12 more Dunk and Egg stories, and these are now with the show’s creator, Parker. Hopefully, we’ll get to see those stories adapted as well.
