Be warned, spoilers ahead for the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! George R.R. Martin has shared his honest thoughts on the surprising toilet humor moment early in the show. The episode begins with Ser Dunk burying his mentor, Ser Arlan of Pennytree. Shortly after, the show includes a detailed scene of him using the bathroom, intended as a joke.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Martin shared his surprise at seeing a detailed scene of Dunk defecating near a tree in the opening of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He said that when he initially saw the edit, he didn’t believe the scene was needed, but showrunner Ira Parker insisted on keeping it.
It was definitely unexpected. My characters are people, so of course they experience bodily functions, but I usually don’t focus on those details in my writing. When I first saw the edited version, I questioned the inclusion of that scene, wondering if it was necessary. However, the showrunner, Ira Parker, felt it worked and decided to keep it in.
The episode starts with some silly humor, but quickly shifts focus. The first episode is mainly about introducing the main characters of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as Dunk travels to Ashford for a tournament. It’s also where he first really gets to know Egg, who becomes his temporary assistant.

Season 1 of the show is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, specifically the first book. It stays true to the source material and firmly establishes itself within the world of Westeros. However, the show also incorporates a comedic style that sometimes diverges from the books, as seen with the opening scene involving, well, poop.
The scene served to highlight the show’s comedic shift compared to the more serious tone of earlier series like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a comedy, so it’s easy to see why George R.R. Martin was surprised by the unexpected and crude humor.
I’m really excited about all the new Game of Thrones shows HBO is planning! We already know House of the Dragon will get seasons 3 and 4, and there are stories planned about Aegon’s Conquest and Corlys Velaryon too. But what I find particularly interesting about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is that, as far as we know, it’s going to be a comedy – something totally different from the other projects in development!
I was honestly surprised by the poop scene, and it got me thinking – maybe we can expect even more unexpected and funny moments like that in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! Apparently, even George R.R. Martin was taken aback by it, which really highlights how different and bold it was compared to the other humor in the episode and the books. It was a weirdly funny way to start things off, and I’m kind of excited to see what else they come up with.
New episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
