Based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the third show set in the world of Game of Thrones, and the second prequel series. It tells the story of Dunk, a wandering knight, and his young apprentice, Egg. Unlike House of the Dragon, it doesn’t focus on a large-scale war, but the events of the series are expected to have a significant impact on the Targaryen family’s future.
The opening of House of the Dragon clearly tells us the show is set 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen was born. However, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms doesn’t offer such a direct timeline. While the series is obviously placed between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, viewers have to rely on hints and details to determine the precise year. Fans familiar with George R.R. Martin’s books will find it much easier to piece together the timeline.
How Many Years Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms After House of the Dragon?
Figuring out when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place is tricky and actually involves a major plot point. The show seems likely to include this event, given its commitment to the source material. Without revealing too much, a key character from a powerful family dies during the tournament that Dunk attends. According to The World of Ice & Fire, co-authored by George R.R. Martin with Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson, this happened in the year 209 AC.
This year’s events connect to a story mentioned in the first episode: Ser Manfred Dondarrion and his father defeating the Vulture King in Dorne back in 206 AC. Dunk hopes Ser Manfred will remember this recent victory and confirm Ser Arlan of Pennytree’s knighthood, which would also support Dunk’s own claim to knighthood. This would place the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms 74 years after the events of House of the Dragon Season 2, which is set in 132 AC.
Much has occurred during those years, hinting at what happens in later seasons of House of the Dragon. It’s important to remember that over those 74 years, the last dragon died in 153 AC, during the rule of King Aegon III Targaryen. The dragons’ decline wasn’t due to external forces, but rather the Targaryens themselves, who used them as weapons during the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons as they fought for the Iron Throne.
Between the events of House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the First Blackfyre Rebellion occurred. This conflict, which happened just 13 years before the spinoff series, pitted King Daeron II Targaryen against his half-brother, Daemon I Blackfyre. Daemon believed he, not Daeron, should be king, despite being born a younger, illegitimate son. In more positive news, Dorne officially became part of the Seven Kingdoms in 187 AC when Daeron’s daughter, Daenerys, married Maron Martell.
How Many Years Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Before Game of Thrones?
The story of Game of Thrones starts in the year 298 AC, meaning A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place 89 years earlier. While Game of Thrones references many past wars and uprisings, it doesn’t really show how the adventures of Dunk and Egg ultimately shape the future of Westeros, even in subtle ways.
I’m a big fan of this Targaryen! Though he’s actually the fourth son of Maekar I, he unexpectedly became King of Westeros after the Great Council in 233 AC. It was a really unlucky chain of events – several older Targaryen men died, and Aemon Targaryen, his uncle, didn’t want the throne. It’s amazing to think that Aemon actually lived all the way up to the events in Game of Thrones, serving as the wise maester at the Night’s Watch and guiding Jon Snow!
In the year 259 after the Conquest, Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, died in a fire at Summerhall while attempting to hatch three dragon eggs. Interestingly, Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys Targaryen’s brother, was born at Summerhall on the very same day. While it’s unknown if the fire and his birth were connected, Rhaegar was often described as melancholic, as he was believed to have been born during a time of great sorrow.
A key element of Game of Thrones revolves around Dunk initially believing Egg is just a stableboy, not realizing he’s actually a prince and future king. This highlights a recurring theme in George R.R. Martin’s writing: even small, seemingly unimportant events can have huge repercussions down the line.
