Nathan Fillion’s Crime Series The Rookie Is Losing Steam on Streaming

Police shows have been a television staple for years, with many enjoying long runs. A recent example is the show starring Nathan Fillion, which has just begun its eighth season.

The latest season of The Rookie premiered recently, marking the first time the show has been filmed and set in Prague. While the premiere episode was well-received, the show’s popularity on streaming is already declining. According to FlixPatrol, The Rookie has fallen five spots on Hulu, moving from the number one position to sixth place.

The show hasn’t had a new episode since Tuesday. Viewership initially increased as people finished watching the existing seasons, but then declined as they moved on to other programs.

Grey’s Anatomy was the most-watched show, with 9-1-1 coming in second and its spin-off, 9-1-1: Nashville, in third. Season 3 of 9-1-1: Nashville recently premiered, and the show landed in fourth place, followed by High Potential.

The series The Rookie continued to perform well, remaining number one in the overall Top 10 charts for both movies and TV shows. It also unexpectedly gained popularity on Netflix, climbing the charts in several countries throughout Central and South America. While it didn’t quite reach the top spot, the show came in second place in Jamaica and the Bahamas on January 18th.

The TV show The Rookie premiered in 2018 and centers on John Nolan, a divorced man who starts a new career with the Los Angeles Police Department at age 45. Throughout its eight seasons, the show explored themes of generational differences among his colleagues, romantic relationships, and featured several storylines involving serial killers.

The series was created by Alexi Hawley and features a talented cast including Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Mercedes Mason, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Afton Williamson, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, Tru Valentino, Lisseth Chavez, and Deric Augustine.

The Rookie Became a Surprise Hit With Gen Z

Most streaming shows these days have short seasons that are released infrequently, often with over a year between them. But The Rookie still follows the traditional model of longer seasons released every year, and surprisingly, this approach has resonated with younger viewers.

A recent Los Angeles Times report, using Nielsen data, revealed that The Rookie was the most-streamed show among viewers under 18 during the 2024-2025 TV season. It outperformed other popular broadcast shows like High Potential and Abbott Elementary.

The show’s creator, Alexi Hawley, says parents frequently tell him their kids are big fans. He also shared that Dwayne Johnson brought his daughter, who’s a huge fan, to visit the set.

The TV show The Rookie is incredibly popular on TikTok, boasting over 2.9 million followers – even more than many traditional shows. A recent preview of the next episode garnered over two million views.

I’m so excited that The Rookie is back with more episodes this season! It’s returning to ABC on Tuesdays, and then later, we’ll get to watch it on Mondays instead. I can’t wait!
