Tom Hardy’s Taboo Season 2 Update: Creator Steven Knight Reveals Plans

2026 promises to be a major year for Tom Hardy on television, and recent news about his previously overlooked series, Taboo, could make it even more significant. Taboo is a brilliant show that many haven’t discovered, created and co-written by Steven Knight – a frequent collaborator with Hardy.

So, this show originally came out in 2017 and everyone loved it enough that it got picked up for a second season right away. But then… nothing. Production just ground to a halt, and it’s been nine years with absolutely no news. Both the creator, Knight, and the lead actor, Hardy, have hinted they’d be up for doing another season if given the chance, but they haven’t actually said anything definite… until recently, thankfully!

While most of Steven Knight’s TV series are still in production, Taboo has been off the air for nearly ten years with no confirmed return date. However, the show’s co-creator has recently offered some encouraging news that will likely thrill fans of Tom Hardy.

Apparently, Tom Hardy and the show’s creator have already discussed plans for a second season of Taboo. This means we might see Hardy reprise his role as James Delaney in the near future. Many fans consider Delaney to be one of Hardy’s best, yet most overlooked, gangster characters, and believe the show deserves to continue beyond its initial season.

Tom Hardy’s Taboo Just Received An Exciting Season 2 Update

Currently, Tom Hardy’s Taboo is a captivating eight-episode series—a true crime masterpiece—that explores the dark and dangerous world of trade in 19th-century London. But by January 2026, the show may be expanding into something even bigger.

As a huge fan of Taboo, I was thrilled to finally hear from Steven Knight, the show’s co-creator with Tom Hardy! He’s just given us the update we’ve all been hoping for after nine long years. It’s amazing to think about how much success Knight has had since Taboo first aired on the BBC and FX back in January 2017.

Steven Knight’s popular crime series Peaky Blinders found a new home on Netflix, and he’s followed that success with other acclaimed shows like SAS: Rogue Heroes, A Thousand Blows, and House of Guinness, attracting a growing audience. However, his earlier series Taboo appears to have been forgotten amidst his recent achievements.

The show’s first season received positive reviews and attracted nearly six million viewers per episode in the US, leading BBC and FX to quickly announce a second season. However, there haven’t been any further updates since then, leaving fans eagerly awaiting news.

Steven Knight Has Already Planned Taboo Season 2 With Tom Hardy

After a long wait, Taboo creator Steven Knight recently shared positive news about a second season, offering hope to the show’s many fans. In an interview with Radio Times, Knight said that planning for the new season is surprisingly advanced.

Tom and I have discussed it, and we have a pretty good idea of what we’d like to do. The main challenge is finding the room to make it happen. I get asked about this a lot, particularly when I’m in the United States.

A return of Taboo seems highly likely. The creators, Knight and Hardy, have already mapped out how the story will continue. It’s just a matter of finding time in their schedules to start filming, which could happen relatively soon.

The main reason season 2 of Taboo didn’t come out right after the first eight episodes in 2017 was likely due to scheduling conflicts. Stephen Knight was busy working on seasons four and five of Peaky Blinders, another show starring Tom Hardy, and also creating the sci-fi series See for Apple TV.

While Tom Hardy was busy promoting Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and filming Venom, where he played the main character, a new opportunity arose the following year. By then, Steven Knight was directing his third movie, Serenity.

Taboo Features Tom Hardy’s Best TV Crime Role Besides Peaky Blinders

Honestly, I’m really hoping Taboo comes back, and the biggest reason is simple: Tom Hardy as James Delaney. It was, in my opinion, his best TV work outside of Peaky Blinders. Delaney is just a fantastic character – totally amoral, a real anti-hero, and driven by this huge grudge against a seriously powerful organization. He’s captivating!

After years of adventurous travel throughout the British Empire, he returns to London deeply changed by his time with African tribes. He’s gained knowledge of their spiritual practices and beliefs in the supernatural, giving him an almost mystical presence and the apparent ability to control powers his British enemies can’t comprehend.

Delaney’s unique background – his mother was Native American, and he spent time aboard ships that transported enslaved Africans – fuels the strong anti-imperialist beliefs of Hardy’s character. This, combined with his connection to African communities, shapes his perspective.

Beyond its unique and compelling origins, Tom Hardy delivers a powerfully captivating performance as James Delaney, creating a character who feels both mysterious and relatable. With so much of Delaney’s story left unexplored after the first season of Taboo, the latest news from creator Steven Knight is particularly exciting.

Steven Knight & Tom Hardy Have Just Worked Together On Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man

With Tom Hardy recently working alongside him on the Peaky Blinders movie, Knight likely had ample opportunity over the past year and a half to develop a new season of Taboo. Hardy was one of the most prominent stars from the original series to return for the film adaptation.

I’m so excited for The Immortal Man to hit theaters on March 6, 2026! And it’s awesome that we won’t have to wait long to see it on Netflix – just two weeks later! It sounds like this movie is a big project, because I heard it might actually give Tom Hardy a bit of free time after filming, which is rare for him. And apparently, after The Immortal Man, the writer/creator of A Thousand Blows, Steven Knight, might have a slightly slower year, which is surprising considering how busy he usually is!

Now feels like the ideal moment for Chips Hardy, Tom’s father and the co-creator of Taboo, to reunite and continue the show. There are still so many fascinating aspects of James Delaney’s world that deserve to be explored, and it would be a shame to leave the story unfinished.
