Disney announced on Sunday that “Zootopia 2” has become the highest-grossing animated film ever in the United States.
The new “Zootopia” movie has earned $1.7 billion worldwide as of Sunday, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It surpassed “Inside Out 2,” which previously held the record with $1.69 billion.
In a statement released Sunday, Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman highlighted the film’s success with audiences around the world.
He credited the fans worldwide, saying their passion and support were essential to achieving this milestone.

I’m so thrilled to see ‘Zootopia 2’ absolutely smash box office records in China! It made an incredible $272 million during its opening weekend. What’s really amazing is that Chinese audiences haven’t been as interested in American movies lately, so this success is a huge deal and shows how much people still love Judy and Nick!
The movie has made most of its money from international audiences, totaling $1.31 billion worldwide. It has earned $390 million in the U.S. and Canada.
So far, “Zootopia 2” has earned the most money internationally in China, bringing in $610 million.
Disney executives believe the first “Zootopia” movie was surprisingly popular in China because audiences related to the story of Judy Hopps, a rabbit police officer, leaving her small hometown for the excitement of the big city. They also connected with the unusual friendship between Judy and her partner, Nick Wilde, a fox.
Disney capitalized on the success of “Zootopia” by creating a dedicated themed area within Shanghai Disneyland, making it the only park in the world to feature such an attraction.
But the warm response in China was not a given.
Ten years ago, big-budget Hollywood movies that were approved by the Chinese government often relied on the Chinese market to significantly increase their worldwide ticket sales.
However, things have become less predictable since the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing tensions between the U.S. and China, and the rise of domestic filmmaking.
The most recent Disney movie to gross over $100 million in China was “Alien: Romulus,” released in 2024.
