The show, which explores the world of oil and the often-criminal side of the business, leaned more into family drama and soapy storylines this season. Despite criticism from viewers and a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a third season is already being planned.

Following his firing by Cami Miller near the end of Season 2, Tommy develops a new strategy to rebuild his life. The season finale also reveals what happens after the attack on Ariana in Episode 9, and how Cooper’s attempt to defend her unexpectedly escalated into a violent confrontation, landing him in legal jeopardy.

Tommy’s Plan & CTT Oil & Cattle, Explained

Following his unexpected firing by Cami in Episode 9, Tommy is considering his next move. While he could quickly find another job with a bigger oil company, he’s feeling a new sense of purpose. He watched Monty’s risk-taking lead to his death in Season 1, and then spent Season 2 urging Cami to play it safe. However, Tommy realizes Cami sees him as a failure from his past and doesn’t want his cautious attitude influencing her new, ambitious pursuit of wealth – a pursuit that mirrors the one that consumed her late husband.

Getting fired sparked something in Tommy, and he decided he was done just watching life from the sidelines. He felt confident he had the skills and resources to start his own business, so he approached Danny Morrell for funding. Tommy then gathered a team – nicknamed the ‘Oil Avengers’ – and founded CTT Oil Exploration and Cattle, adding ‘Cattle’ for legal purposes and as a playful reference to the show Yellowstone.

He appoints Cooper as president, trusting his son’s talent and instincts to lead the company. He takes on the role of vice president, working alongside him. The season concludes with a positive outcome, as Rebecca, Nathan, Dale, Ariana, Boss, and Boss’s oil crew all remain involved. Tommy ends up surrounded by both his biological family and the close-knit group he’s built around him.

Did Cooper Just Get Away With Murder?

Similar to season two of Friday Night Lights, the show Landman depicts Cooper going too far to protect Ariana, resulting in him hitting a man, Jonathan, seventeen times. Although Jonathan didn’t die immediately, the finale reveals he later suffered a fatal heart attack. The police attempt to blame Cooper, especially since Jonathan had connections to powerful people in the area. However, despite the seriousness of the situation, the police ultimately drop the case.

As expected, Rebecca and Tommy strongly confront the police, emphasizing that anyone would have acted like Cooper if their family was at risk. This, combined with the threat of exposing the situation – which everyone fears would create problems for the police department – is enough to convince them to back down. Cooper is released, and the case appears closed, though it’s possible Taylor Sheridan might revisit this secret and use it to create conflict for Cooper’s new life. It’s also strange that Ariana’s emotional response to the attempted assault is no longer being shown on the series.

Ainsley and Angela’s Season 2 Arcs, Explained

Look, Ainsley and Angela continue to be the most talked-about characters in Landman Season 2, and for good reason. Both actresses are really delivering strong performances, but I can’t help but feel Taylor Sheridan isn’t giving them the richest material to work with. Angela’s storyline about Ainsley striking out on her own had real emotional potential, but the show unfortunately dropped the ball in the last couple of episodes. Instead of exploring that depth, they opted for some pretty superficial humor – like a shopping spree – which ultimately made her character feel a bit one-dimensional. It felt like a missed opportunity, honestly.

Watching Ainsley navigate dorm life with Paigyn has been incredible – honestly, it feels like the biggest step we’ve seen in her journey so far. The season ended with her really finding her voice, standing up for Paigyn when those guys were being awful to her. It all came down to a pretty classic bully situation, but it was so powerful to see Ainsley realize that you can connect with anyone, even if they’re different from you. I was cheering for her the whole time! And honestly, Taylor Sheridan really nailed this storyline.

The Real Meaning Behind ‘Landman’ Season 2

Starting his own oil company won’t be easy for Tommy, but he’s different from both Monty Miller and the character John Dutton from Yellowstone. Unlike them, Tommy’s driven by family, not obsession. He’s determined to learn from past mistakes and build a better future. He’s not doing this alone either – he wants to involve his family and give them a chance to succeed alongside him. He believes in sharing both the risks and the rewards, and doesn’t want to pursue his own ambitions without them.

Tommy learned a valuable lesson from Monty’s errors. Unlike Monty, he won’t abandon his family to get rich. If he’s going to pursue this path, he’ll do it with them. However, it’s unclear if his plan will work, as deals with cartel leaders are notoriously dangerous. Plus, even though Tommy means well by making a deal with Danny, Cami will likely be furious when she finds out he’s uprooted everyone.

The final scene with Angela, watching the sunset and celebrating a victory, is particularly poignant. Tommy unexpectedly sees the coyote, a character we haven’t seen since the first season’s finale. Throughout Landman, the coyote symbolizes the harsh realities and consequences of the oil industry. While Tommy might be drawn into this world, he currently protects himself from its darker side by focusing on his family and those he cares about – a way to truly succeed in life.
