Jason Momoa Shares “Ultimate Dream” of Landing Lobo Role

Jason Momoa, known for playing Aquaman (the King of Atlantis) in DC films, is taking on a new role this summer in Supergirl. Surprisingly, Momoa has said he actually wanted to play the character Lobo – a blue-skinned bounty hunter from the planet Czarnia – even more than Aquaman. When asked about his new character during an interview on TODAY, Momoa hinted that…

I think he’s incredible, and playing Lobo is a dream role for me. Honestly, I’d rather play Lobo than Aquaman – it’s always been my top choice.

With Supergirl set to premiere on June 26th, it’s still unknown how significant Jason Momoa’s role as Lobo will be in the film. The first trailer only showed Lobo for a few seconds, and Matthias Schoenaerts’ character is established as the primary villain. This suggests Supergirl might be a brief introduction to Lobo, with larger storylines for him planned for future movies.

Okay, so Jason Momoa recently shared a hilarious story about his first call with Zack Snyder. Apparently, he fully expected to be cast as Lobo! He figured Snyder was bringing him on board as a villain for Batman v Superman, and he was so ready to play that role. Little did he know, Snyder actually had Aquaman in mind for him – a part he’d ultimately play in five different films. It just goes to show how things can change in Hollywood, and how a simple misunderstanding can lead to an iconic casting!

Michael Bay Almost Directed a Tarantino-esque Lobo Movie

Warner Bros. Pictures

Interestingly, action director Michael Bay was once considered to direct a standalone Lobo movie for the DC Universe. Jason Fuchs, who co-wrote Wonder Woman, had already written a script. While Bay never officially committed to the project, Fuchs shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast what his take on the film would have been like. Bay is known for directing films like Bad Boys, Armageddon, and Transformers.

The scrapped movie was extremely violent and disturbing – far more so than even Deadpool, almost like something you’d never see in a Disney film. That’s likely why it was ultimately canceled, according to the source. The creator compared it to a Quentin Tarantino take on Guardians of the Galaxy. He also revealed a planned scene where a villain, in a parody of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, would desperately try to appeal to Lobo by revealing his mother’s name was Martha, only for Lobo to jokingly respond that his own mother was also named Martha.

I really enjoyed writing that script, which featured a Green Lantern and a lot of other fun DC characters. The relationship between Lobo and Jack T. Chance was particularly great, and Jack T. Chance played a central role in the story. I also included a lot of elements from L.E.G.I.O.N. While the script was definitely focused on Lobo, I envisioned it as potentially the first in a series about L.E.G.I.O.N.

In DC Comics, L.E.G.I.O.N. stands for the Licensed Extra-Governmental Interstellar Operatives Network – essentially a police force headed up by Brainiac 2.
