The suspenseful thriller Before I Go to Sleep, featuring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong, will no longer be available on Netflix after February 6th. The film, directed by Rowan Joffé, is based on the 2011 novel by S. J. Watson and stars Anne-Marie Duff.
The 2014 film Before I Go to Sleep centers around Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman), a woman who lost her ability to form long-term memories after a traumatic brain injury. Every day, she wakes up with no recollection of her life, including her husband, Ben (Colin Firth), and the doctor, Mike Nasch (Mark Strong), who is trying to help her.
I’m totally hooked on this story about Christine! She’s been told to start a visual diary to help her remember what happened before her injury, and it’s leading her down this crazy path. She’s uncovering secrets about people from her past, like her friend Claire, and honestly, it’s getting really weird. The more she digs, the harder it is to tell what’s real and what isn’t, and her life is just completely spiraling. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

The movie Before I Go to Sleep has gotten mixed reactions from critics, earning a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the BBC praised it as a suspenseful and cleverly constructed thriller with a chilling mood and a well-maintained focus.
The Toronto Star called the movie a typical thriller with frustrating plot problems, while The Hollywood Reporter said it was a disappointing, run-of-the-mill psychological thriller that didn’t live up to its potential.

We found that the explanations were less compelling than the mystery itself, and as the big reveal approached, the truth felt increasingly unbelievable. This ultimately turned what could have been a clever and thought-provoking thriller into something more like a spooky tale for bedtime.
In an interview with Vogue, Nicole Kidman explained she was attracted to the role because she appreciated the character’s potential for authenticity and vulnerability.

I don’t wear much makeup in the film, and my character experiences a lot of emotional pain. I enjoyed the challenge of portraying that authenticity – feeling vulnerable and trying to cope with difficult circumstances while remaining composed, even if deeply upset.
You know, what I really loved about the whole ‘Before I Go To Sleep’ movie is that the author, S.J. Watson, actually loved the director’s vision! I think it’s so tough when an author isn’t happy with how their book is adapted, but luckily, S.J. was right there on set, involved in the process, and he was thrilled with what Roland Joffe did. That made the whole experience so much better, knowing he was on board and happy with it.
Before I Go to Sleep will leave Netflix on 6 January.
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available, and this edition honors music superstar Dolly Parton! You can purchase “Dolly at 80” at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
