Percy Jackson Season 2 Introduces Blackjack The Pegasus – But There’s A Problem

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, episode 7

Season 2 of Percy Jackson & The Olympians introduces a fantastic supporting character straight from the books. There’s a significant issue with how this character is portrayed, but it’s still possible to address it.

In the seventh episode of Percy Jackson & The Olympians season 2, Percy and his friends successfully get the Golden Fleece from Luke on The Princess Andromeda, setting the stage for a final showdown at Camp Half-Blood. The episode also introduced a character I particularly love from Rick Riordan’s books, and they helped the heroes along the way.

Percy Jackson Season 2, Episode 7 Debuts Blackjack The Pegasus

In the Percy Jackson series, Blackjack isn’t just a cool, black Pegasus—he’s Percy’s witty and dependable friend who appears throughout the books and even in later stories.

In Percy Jackson season 2, episode 7, the winged horse Blackjack appears in live-action for the first time after Percy rescues him, quickly showing the close connection between them.

Percy’s father also being a creator of horses and pegasi was a big help. After Percy defeated some of Luke’s allies, Blackjack agreed to fly Clarisse and the Golden Fleece back to Camp Half-Blood, marking the beginning of his continued loyalty to Percy in the future.

The show’s biggest drawback is that Percy’s horse communication only works one way – we never get to hear Blackjack, his horse, actually speak, which is a real shame.

We Need To Hear Blackjack’s Voice In Percy Jackson Season 3 (And Beyond)

It’s a shame Blackjack isn’t speaking; his distinct personality is a big part of what makes him so popular in the books. He’s known for being casual, straightforward, and humorous – like when he playfully calls Percy “boss” instead of the more formal “lord,” unlike other horses.

Fortunately, there’s a simple way to improve things going forward. Giving Blackjack, Percy’s winged horse, lines to speak as his role expands in future seasons would make every scene he appears in even better. It would also allow for fantastic voice acting, turning what’s already a smart casting decision into an exceptional one.

Hopefully, the third season of Percy Jackson will address this issue and give us a truly great character to follow throughout the series.

The final two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will be available to stream on Disney+ starting January 21st.
