Russo Bros. Address Chris Evans’ Captain America Return in Avengers: Doomsday

As the second-to-last movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, Avengers: Doomsday aims to bring together both new and established heroes to face their greatest challenge yet: Doctor Doom. Although Robert Downey Jr.’s role as the villain had been announced, it wasn’t until the first trailer was released that fans learned Chris Evans would also be returning.

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of several Captain America and Avengers movies starring Chris Evans, recently explained to Empire Magazine (via Avengers Updates on X) why they wanted him to return for future projects. They emphasized that Evans’s character is crucial to the overall story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying they consider his role central to the entire narrative and couldn’t imagine the MCU without him.

The trailer for Doomsday shows Captain America (Steve Rogers) revisiting a time from Avengers: Endgame to be with Peggy Carter. Instead of action scenes, the trailer focuses on quieter moments: Steve riding a motorcycle, storing his Captain America suit, and cradling his baby.

It seems this quiet new life for Steve Rogers will be interrupted by a coming crisis, and his child might be what compels him to fight again. The trailer ends with the message: “Steve Rogers Will Return In Avengers: Doomsday.” However, since Steve passed on the Captain America shield and role to Sam Wilson at the end of Endgame, his return doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be Captain America again.

Even though Chris Evans isn’t currently playing Captain America, the directors, the Russos, really wanted to bring him back because they had worked with him for a long time. After the trailer came out, they shared on Instagram how important the character and the story were to them, saying it felt inevitable that he would return.

The trailers released for Doomsday have each shown a different character or group of heroes. The initial trailer centered on Steve Rogers, and later previews spotlighted Thor, the X-Men from previous Fox films, the Fantastic Four, and Black Panther.

The Russos, after releasing the final trailer, explained that what viewers have been seeing over the past four weeks isn’t just promotional material. They described these clips as actual stories and hints, urging fans to look closely for details. Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters on December 18, 2026.
