The Surprise Sequel to $891M Horror Franchise Paranormal Activity Gets Major Update

Occasionally, a horror series can truly redefine the genre, and the original Paranormal Activity did just that when it was released in 2007. While it wasn’t the first found-footage horror film, its unique camera work and story took the concept to a new level, leading to six sequels.

Just over five years after the last installment, a seventh Paranormal Activity movie is in the works. James Wan, known for his work on Saw and The Conjuring series, will produce the film alongside Jason Blum of Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Paramount. Currently without a title, the movie is scheduled to be released on May 21, 2027. Oren Peli, who directed the original 2007 film, will also co-produce, helping to maintain a connection to the franchise’s roots.

What’s really striking is how “humble” the origins of Paranormal Activity were. Made for only $51,000 (with a total of $250,000 after festival success allowed for a new ending), it went on to earn $194 million at the box office and receive an 82% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Paranormal Activity Needs a Refresh for 2027

To put things in perspective, Paranormal Activity was almost as successful as The Blair Witch Project, the film often credited with starting the found-footage horror trend. Despite earning only $50 million less, Paranormal Activity launched a hugely popular franchise, resulting in numerous sequels: Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014), Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015), and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021).

It’s a long title, but the film series has been incredibly successful, earning almost a billion dollars since 2007 and becoming one of the most profitable horror franchises ever. The upcoming, currently untitled project will be revitalized by James Wan and Blumhouse, a production company that has become a major force in horror since 2007, delivering hits like Get Out, The Purge, and The Black Phone starring Ethan Hawke, among others.

It remains to be seen if the newest Paranormal Activity film can recapture the magic of the original from almost two decades ago, but audiences will likely be eager to see it when it’s released next spring – and it might keep a few of them up at night.

The Paranormal Activity franchise is available to stream on all video-on-demand platforms.
