Teyana Taylor’s remarkable rise from reality TV as she’s tipped for Oscar glory despite just 20 minutes of screen time in One Battle After Another

Even a short, 20-minute appearance in a film can be enough to earn an award nomination – and even win the award itself.

Teyana Taylor encouraged people to keep chasing their dreams when she accepted an award at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

The actress received the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Perfidia Beverly Hills in the film, One Battle After Another.

The actress first became well-known through reality television, and her career has taken off recently. Experts now predict she may even be nominated for an Oscar this year.

She received the unexpected award only a few months after appearing with Kim Kardashian, Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash, Sarah Paulson, and Glenn Close in Ryan Murphy’s ‘All’s Fair’.

After the show received overwhelmingly negative reviews and a legal battle with Disney+, her chances of winning any awards appeared very low.

The show earned a rarely seen 0% ‘rotten’ rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Months later, Teyana proved the doubters wrong when she accepted a Golden Globe award in front of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Taylor admitted she nearly skipped writing a speech, as she didn’t expect to win. She then thanked director Paul Thomas Anderson, explaining that his work inspired the speech that ultimately led to her award.

In her acceptance speech, she expressed deep thanks to Paul ‘Let ‘Em Cook’ Thomas Anderson, praising his vision, trust, and talent. She said her appreciation knew no bounds.

‘I love you, we love you and thank you so much for holding space for me and our entire cast.’

Taylor shared that her daughters, 10-year-old Iman ‘Junie’ Tayla Shumpert Jr. and 5-year-old Rue Rose Shumpert, were watching the award show from upstairs.

She is married to long-time husband Iman Shumpert, whom she wed in 2016. 

She playfully told her family to put down their phones and pay attention, calling them her ‘grounding force’ – the people who keep her balanced and centered.

Taylor concluded her speech with a message for her ‘Brown sisters and little Brown girls’ who were watching.

Taylor emphasized that being gentle isn’t a weakness, having strong connections isn’t excessive, and inner goodness doesn’t require approval to be expressed.

‘We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.’

Taylor was just 16 when she appeared on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 in 2007.

Oh my gosh, Teyana? I’ve followed her forever! She grew up right in Harlem, and her mom, Nikki Taylor – who’s also her manager, can you believe it?! – really pushed her from the start to go for everything: music, dancing, fashion… she was destined for greatness, I always knew it!

Before becoming an actress, Teyana Taylor started her career in music at age 15. She also notably choreographed Beyoncé’s “Ring The Alarm” music video.

She eventually joined Star Trak Entertainment, a record label created by Pharrell Williams under Interscope Records.

Once Teyana signed with a record label, she began appearing in music videos for popular artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West.

She took a break from her career in 2020, and after five years, she came back with her fourth album. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

Teyana recently shared details about her relationship with Kanye, speaking out after he’s faced a lot of public scrutiny lately.

The star opened up about the topic during an interview with Vanity Fair published on Tuesday. 

I’ve been a fan of Taylor for years, and I remember when she collaborated with Kanye West – she was amazing in his ‘Fade’ music video back in 2016! She even signed to his G.O.O.D Music label, which was so exciting for everyone. It was a real shame when she decided to leave in 2020, she mentioned feeling like her contributions weren’t really valued, and honestly, I could see that happening.

I don’t need to agree with everything he does or says, but I won’t just turn my back on him and completely dismiss him with harsh words,” the singer explained.

The rapper known as Heartless faced criticism after sharing antisemitic statements and expressing controversial political views on social media.

He has since walked back his previous comments and stated on X last year, ‘I am done with antisemitism. I love all people.’

Taylor told Vanity Fair that she doesn’t support some of the things her brothers do and prefers to stay out of it.

She said she’s always honest and straightforward in her conversations with Kanye West, also known as Ye.

Look, people come to me for honest advice, that’s just what I’m known for. So, if someone asks my opinion, they can be sure I’ll give them a straight, truthful answer – no fluff, just the real deal.

The celebrity stressed that she prefers to handle things privately and focus on her own life. She explained that she quietly takes care of what needs to be done and stays focused on her own well-being.

Taylor joined Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label in 2012, and they collaborated on projects like the music video for ‘We Got Love’.

The dancer was able to create her own music and released three albums through Kanye West’s record label: VII (2014), K.T.S.E (2018), and The Album (2020).

Her performance as Inez in A Thousand and One earned her a National Board of Review Award and helped launch her into the career-defining role in One Battle After Another.

She’s also appeared in films like Coming 2 America and on the TV show Star. Her next project is a movie called The Rip, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

In the series One Battle After Another, also known as Perfidia Beverly Hills, Taylor plays the mother of a child whose father is the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The new film by Anderson boasts a strong cast including Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall, and Wood Harris.
