Very few movies have earned a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, but these four films have! Released in the last seven years, they represent some of the most highly praised and essential films of the 2020s.
Classic films such as Seven Samurai, Stagecoach, and Anatomy of a Murder all received perfect scores, and more recent favorites like Toy Story and Before Sunrise did too. If you haven’t seen these four incredible movies, now’s the time – they’re all currently available for streaming.
Bait
The 2019 film Bait, from Neon, earned a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and you can watch it on Hulu. This isn’t the same as the 2000 movie starring Jamie Foxx; this Bait tells the story of an English fisherman whose boat is ruined when his brother turns it into a tourist attraction.
I was really surprised by Bait – it looks like it could be from the silent film era, but it’s actually a very recent movie, written and directed by Mark Jenkin. It’s not a long film, just an hour and 29 minutes, but it completely draws you in. As a film fan, I really appreciated how skillfully it was made and how it paid tribute to older, classic movies.
Nowhere Special
James Norton delivers a standout performance in the 2020 film Nowhere Special. He plays John, a 34-year-old man facing a terminal illness who is searching for a loving home for his young son before he passes away.
“Nowhere Special” is a deeply touching film that stays with you long after you’ve seen it, and it’s well worth watching. You can stream it on Kanopy or the Cohen Media Channel, which are both available through a free trial of Prime Video.
On Becoming A Guinea Fowl
One of the best hidden movie gems with a perfect 100% rating is the A24 dark comedy On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, which you can currently stream on HBO Max. Released in 2024, the film features Susan Chardy as Shula, a woman who discovers unsettling family secrets after finding her uncle’s body.
Even though the idea behind On Becoming a Guinea Fowl sounds a bit unsettling, the film is surprisingly humorous and offers a truly original perspective. Like other A24 productions, it’s complex and makes you think, and it’s actually received higher praise from critics than even popular A24 films like Lady Bird and Eighth Grade.
Mickey And The Bear
Camila Morrone, known for her role in the 2019 film Mickey and the Bear, is now appearing in the latest season of the Prime Video spy series The Night Manager. In Mickey and the Bear, Morrone plays Mickey Peck, a teenager who has to quickly become responsible and care for her father, a veteran struggling with addiction.
You can rent Mickey and the Bear online for $4.99, or watch it with a free trial of MHZ Choice on Prime Video. It’s a powerful and beautifully made film with excellent acting and a realistic, often dark, feel. Many critics agree it’s a modern classic – it currently has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
