Laurence recently spoke with Xpsp about the popular Ramyatta couple and the heartwarming story behind the fan-made “Journey Together” zine, which was created by devoted fans.
Fans often bond over “ships” – pairings they imagine between characters in a series. A popular pairing in the Overwatch 2 community is “Ramyatta,” featuring the characters Ramattra and Zenyatta. Recently, Ramyatta fans collaborated to create a special fan-made publication called “Journey Together.” Laurence, who goes by the usernames shambalidottxt and volskayadottxt, discussed with Xpsp what makes this pairing appealing and the process of creating a zine.
Who are Ramattra and Zenyatta in Overwatch 2?
Ramattra and Zenyatta are both heroes in Overwatch 2 – Ramattra plays as a tank, while Zenyatta provides support. They both have a shared past as monks at the Shambali Monastery. After the Omnic Crisis, Ramattra went to the monastery and trained under Tekhartha Mondatta. Later, he brought Zenyatta there, hoping he would also find meaning and direction.
Over time, Ramattra’s beliefs moved away from those of his teacher, Mondatta. This ultimately led him to lead Null Sector in a fight for his people. Recently, Ramattra and Zenyatta met again at the statue of Mondatta in King’s Row. Mondatta himself was killed while giving a speech about improving relations between humans and omnics.
Why fans love the Ramyatta pairing
Laurence explained in an interview with Xpsp that his appreciation for the pairing of Ramattra and Zenyatta, or ‘Ramyatta,’ developed from little details within Overwatch 2. He specifically mentioned a touching voice line where Ramattra says, “I have you, Zenyatta,” and the shared lore about the two characters staying up late to stargaze.
Laurence explained that after playing Ramattra for a while, he started seeing connections to the Transformers universe. He realized the dynamic between Ramattra and Zenyatta reminded him of Megatron and Optimus Prime, especially with the recent Overwatch 2 and Transformers collaboration. He jokingly said it’s completely changed how he thinks about the characters.
Laurence noticed that many Overwatch 2 players who are also fans of Transformers seem to enjoy playing as Ramattra. He believes this is due to Ramattra having similar characteristics to well-known versions of the Transformers character, Megatron.
That comic showing Ramattra and Zenyatta reconnecting gave him even more inspiration, and also excited fans who ship them as a couple (known as the ‘Ramyatta’ fandom).
Laurence mentioned that Ramon Tikaram consistently delivers incredibly emotional performances when discussing Zenyatta. Feodor Chin was also deeply affected, excitedly commenting on how cool Ramattra is and speculating about a complex connection between the two characters. Laurence felt it was a combination of subtle details that made the story impactful, but ultimately considered the ‘Reconciliation’ comic to be exceptional.
Wow, what an amazing actor! And his voice is just beautiful. He was calling in from London, so it must have been super late for him, which I really appreciate him doing. We actually got to record together, which hardly ever happens, and it was such a pleasure. I think we did a couple of cinematic scenes and some lines for the game itself, though I’m not sure everything’s been released yet. I really feel like there’s a deep connection between Ramattra and Zenyatta that hasn’t fully come out, but I’m hoping players will get to see more of their history – I think it’s a really compelling story.

Creating the Ramyatta zine
Hey, so back in December 2025, someone named Laurence dropped this awesome zine called “Journey Together” for the Ramyatta fandom. It’s still up on Google Drive if you want to check it out! Seriously, 13 people contributed over 70 pages of art – it’s a ton of work. The best part? It’s totally free to read, which is amazing!
Laurence explained that his new project, “Journey Together,” grew out of a previous, extensive zine he created called “We’ll Build Our Own Future,” which involved 40 people and reached 200 pages. For this new zine focused on Ramyatta, he envisioned a more intimate collaboration. When another Ramyatta enthusiast, Wong, joined the effort, they worked together to bring in artists and writers from across the globe, all with the shared aim of celebrating Ramyatta with friends.
Laurence explained to Xpsp that they connected with people globally to collaborate on a project. While language differences sometimes made communication tricky – especially when working on the zine – everyone shared a passion for Ramyatta. They all communicate on Discord, and despite misunderstandings, they’re collectively creating a book about Ramyatta. Wong sourced artists internationally, and Laurence focused on artists from Canada, the USA, and various European countries.
Making the zine wasn’t always easy – transferring files between Procreate and Krita and coordinating schedules with everyone’s full-time jobs presented some hurdles. However, the team persevered through many revisions to finish it. Finally, a limited number of physical copies were printed as a thank you to everyone who contributed.
“We do this purely out of our affection for the ship and our desire to see it sailing again,” Laurence explained.
Laurence suggests that when creating a zine or organizing a fan event, starting with a detailed schedule and clear instructions for submissions can help avoid problems. It’s also important to establish content ratings and boundaries upfront to prevent issues later on, though being willing to make exceptions is helpful. Ultimately, Laurence believes that genuine enthusiasm for the source material is the key to a successful project.
Why celebrating Ramyatta matters
Laurence was thrilled to see his Ramyatta zine published and shared with others. He especially appreciated his parents’ enthusiastic support of his art, even though they don’t know much about Overwatch 2. His mother encouraged him to start drawing again by buying him a new sketchbook, and his father was so impressed with his latest artwork that he wants a poster for his office.
Laurence mentioned he used to be a big fan of an anime called “Sora o Miageru Shōjo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai,” but it was hard to find others who enjoyed it, which made him feel lonely. He told Xpsp that he doesn’t want fans of Ramyatta to ever feel that same isolation, even if interest in Overwatch 2 eventually decreases.
Laurence said he hoped Ramyatta wouldn’t suffer a similar fate. He imagined that someday, perhaps in ten years, he’d have a booth at an art convention and people would recognize all his work as being related to Overwatch. He’d happily confirm it, and also mention he had some smaller pieces based on Transformers, too.
Laurence shared that Overwatch inspired him to start drawing again, something he hadn’t done with any other game or hobby. He encouraged fans to continue making art based on the things they’re passionate about.
Overwatch did something no other form of entertainment has ever done for me: it inspired me to start drawing again. That’s a gift I truly cherish.
He went on to say that while he doesn’t always love the way Overwatch is developing, he’ll always be a passionate supporter because no other game has inspired him so strongly. He encourages anyone who enjoys a hobby, even one that others criticize, to keep creating and sharing their work – especially if it’s something they’re truly passionate about.
“Journey Together” perfectly captures the idea of self-discovery and connection, brought about by a common passion for Ramyatta.
