As Kathleen Kennedy prepares to leave Lucasfilm, she’s shared her biggest regret regarding a Star Wars project that didn’t succeed. When Disney bought the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas, fans were thrilled at the prospect of more films and shows. However, the relaunch hasn’t been smooth sailing, to say the least.
For more than ten years, Kennedy and her team have created a wide range of content within the popular Star Wars universe. Beyond the sequel trilogy, they launched successful Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian in 2020 and recently concluded the highly praised series Andor in 2025. However, not every project has been a hit.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shared that the disappointing performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story is something she regrets. The 2018 film, directed by Ron Howard, introduced Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo, aiming to show the character’s origins. Kennedy explained that while Ehrenreich was a talented actor, it was a difficult task to reimagine a role so closely associated with Harrison Ford. You can find her complete statement below.
I don’t really have any major regrets, though I do feel a little disappointed about Solo: A Star Wars Story. I was really enthusiastic when I brought Larry Kasdan on board to work on it. But we eventually realized that, at least for the time being, it’s impossible to truly replace the character of Han Solo.
Alden Ehrenreich was a fantastic actor, and while he did a great job, we put him in a really difficult position with that film. Once we started, we had to finish it, but looking back, I do have some regrets about the timing. I don’t regret the actual process of making the movie, just that we perhaps jumped into it too quickly.
Solo: A Star Wars Story was one of the first standalone films Disney made within the Star Wars universe. It followed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), which told the story of rebels who stole the plans for the Death Star – plans that were crucial to its destruction in A New Hope. Rogue One has become a fan favorite, celebrated for offering a fresh take on the rebellion against the Empire.
Overall, Solo: A Star Wars Story was a good film and a welcome addition to the Star Wars universe. Alden Ehrenreich did an excellent job as young Han Solo, capturing the character’s spirit without simply copying Harrison Ford’s performance. While the movie wasn’t flawless, it achieved as much as could be expected given the challenges it faced. The supporting cast was also strong, featuring impressive performances from Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi’ra, and Woody Harrelson as Tobias Beckett.
The timing of Solo: A Star Wars Story wasn’t ideal, coming so soon after Han Solo’s unexpected and upsetting death in Star Wars: The Force Awakens – killed by his own son, Kylo Ren. Had they waited a while before making a prequel about his origins, the film might have been more successful. Hopefully, Star Wars will find a way to revisit the characters and stories introduced in Solo in the future.
