Lleyton and Bec Hewitt’s daughter Mia reveals why she became a grungy rock star and didn’t follow in her famous father’s tennis footsteps

Mia Hewitt, whose parents are tennis star Lleyton Hewitt and actress Bec Hewitt, has explained why she chose a different path than her father’s career in tennis.

Rather than becoming a professional tennis player, the 20-year-old has chosen to pursue a music career, performing with Chèrise Combrink as part of the folk duo, Father’s Favourite.

On Friday’s episode of Today, Mia told hosts Jayne Azzopardi and Joel Dry that she lacked the necessary coordination to pursue a career in professional tennis.

“You write and perform your own songs – you’re the whole package! What made you decide to become a musician?” Jayne asked the up-and-coming rock artist.

Music has always been my absolute passion – it just feels like a part of who I am. Honestly, I’m all thumbs when it comes to physical coordination, so sports like tennis were never going to be my thing, as Mia so perfectly put it!

Music has always been a huge part of my life, and I finally decided to go for it when I built up the confidence to actually perform for others. It was a big step, but one I’m so glad I took!

You know, for years I dreamed of a life in music, but it took me a while to build up the courage to actually go for it. As I got older, I finally felt confident enough to pursue that dream, and I’m so glad I did!

I’ve become close friends with some wonderful people, and we decided to form a band. It’s been a great experience so far.

I’m so happy for Mia! She’s dating Vanda Erich, a talented musician who plays with the awesome indie rock band Liquid Zoo, based right out of Sydney. It’s wonderful to see them both thriving, both personally and creatively.

She debuted her new beau during a day out at North Bondi in January 2024.

The couple went into a pharmacy to buy sunscreen before relaxing on the beach’s popular grassy hill, a well-known hangout for both influencers and people who live nearby.

Mia’s band played their first show last August, and her mom, Bec, who used to be on the TV show Home and Away, is said to want to help guide Mia’s music career.

Most people recognize her as Hailey Smith Lawson from the TV show Home and Away, which she appeared on from 1998 to 2005, but she also briefly pursued a career as a pop singer.

After becoming well-known on television, Bec launched her first solo album in 2002. The album’s lead single, “All Seats Taken,” reached number 10 on the Australian ARIA chart.

Although her album received a variety of opinions, her music career largely ended in 2004 when she left Warner Music.

According to a source, Bec wants to protect her daughter from the challenges often faced by young, new artists.

Bec is good at handling difficult people and problematic bosses, and she wants to help Mia avoid repeating some of her own early career errors, such as being overly trusting when starting new jobs.

According to a source, Mia is currently very focused on music, but she’s still open to acting, just like her mother.

I’ve always been so impressed with Mia – she gets it. She understands that talent alone isn’t enough these days, especially in music. She knows breaking into the industry means you have to be a creator in all senses – making music and building a presence online, really putting yourself out there. It’s awesome to see someone so prepared for everything it takes.

‘Ultimately, that can lead to more work like modelling, acting and even presenting.

Mia’s parents, Lleyton and Bec, first met in 1999 while playing in a charity tennis match called the Starlight Cup. Lleyton is a famous tennis player, and Bec is a singer.

It took a few years for the couple to get back in touch, but they finally reunited in person in 2005. Their romance moved quickly, and they were engaged after just six weeks.

As well as singer Mia, they also share another daughter Ava, 15, and son Cruz, 17.
