Kathleen Kennedy gives update on multiple new Star Wars movies

Kathleen Kennedy recently told Deadline that the new Star Wars film, Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and featuring Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray, was always intended to be a self-contained story. She explained, “We wanted to be able to just make a movie and tell a story without it necessarily being part of a larger series.”

She hadn’t initially planned for a continuing series, but she admitted that the actor’s strong performance could change things. “He’s incredibly talented,” she said, “and I’d be surprised if we didn’t explore potential future stories with him.”

I was so thrilled to hear Kennedy confirm that the next Star Wars movie hitting theaters will be the Mandalorian film, and it’s being directed by Jon Favreau! She said we can expect it in May, which is amazing. She’s already planning to meet with Jon as soon as she returns to discuss it. Apparently, they finished filming back in November, and now she’ll be working to oversee the visual effects and everything else in post-production. I can’t wait!

Kennedy praised the scripts submitted for potential projects, calling Taika Waititi’s “hilarious and great.” She also highlighted strong submissions from Donald Glover, and a script by Scott Burns featuring Steve Soderbergh and Adam Driver. However, she noted that any final choices wouldn’t be up to her alone, especially as she’s preparing to leave her position.

Kennedy acknowledged that negative online reactions can influence filmmakers, suggesting Rian Johnson was affected by the backlash to his work. She explained that many directors and actors now worry about how audiences will respond to their projects, and she makes a point of being particularly upfront with actresses, who often face disproportionate and unfair criticism.
