The upcoming HBO reboot of the Harry Potter series will feature a new musical score composed by Hans Zimmer. Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on shows like Succession and His Dark Materials, is the showrunner. Production began in 2025, and the series is currently slated to debut on HBO Max in 2027.
Hans Zimmer will compose the music for the new Harry Potter series, working with his company, Bleeding Fingers Music. While various composers have created scores for past Harry Potter films, the famous theme song, “Hedwig’s Theme,” which is instantly recognizable with the franchise, was originally written by John Williams, known for his work on films like Jurassic Park, Superman, and Star Wars.
Hans Zimmer is a highly celebrated composer known for his work on many famous movie soundtracks, including those for The Lion King, Thelma & Louise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Top Gun: Maverick, and Dune. According to Warner Bros. Discovery, Zimmer is partnering with Kara Talve and Anže Rozman to create music for a new Harry Potter project.
Zimmer, Talve, and Rozman said in a statement:
The music of Harry Potter has inspired composers worldwide, and we’re incredibly honored to contribute to such a significant project. My colleagues, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman, and I understand the weight of this responsibility. Like the enchanting world of Harry Potter, we believe magic exists all around us – you just need to seek it out. With this new score, we hope to bring audiences a little closer to that feeling of wonder, while also paying tribute to the beloved music that came before.
The upcoming Harry Potter series has cast a new group of young actors to play Harry, Ron, and Hermione, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout taking on the lead roles. Joining them are established stars like John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, Paapa Essiedu, and Anton Lesser, as well as Warwick Davis, who returns as Professor Flitwick from the original films, to portray the adult characters.
The new series will be a much more faithful adaptation of the Harry Potter books, including storylines that weren’t in the films. Each season will cover one book, similar to how other popular fantasy shows like Game of Thrones have been adapted for television.
The new adaptation could really benefit from a strong opening, similar to the one in Game of Thrones. Just like finding the right actors, creating memorable music is a big challenge for this new Harry Potter series, considering how beloved the original was. However, they’ve now hired a well-known composer to help with that.
