A new trailer for Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is out, hinting at a new giant monster that will rival Godzilla and Kong. The series, which is part of the larger Monsterverse, bridges the gap between the events of the Godzilla movies from 2014 and 2019, and delves into the history of the Monarch organization, both before and after the events of Kong: Skull Island. The first season ended by setting up a storyline focused on Kong and Skull Island for the upcoming season, which takes place in 2017.
The new trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters focuses on a mysterious new Titan – a giant creature, known as ‘Titan X’, that will be a significant threat. Though Kong and Godzilla will both appear, this aquatic monster is poised to challenge them as well as humanity. Currently, little is known about Titan X, but speculation ranges from it being a creature introduced later in the Monsterverse story, to a reimagining of a classic monster from mythology or horror.
Is Titan X Tiamat?

Apple TV
Tiamat first appeared briefly in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters and in the 2021 graphic novel Godzilla Dominion, but made its full on-screen debut in 2024’s Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. This ancient sea creature is one of the MonsterVerse’s most powerful Titans, and its ability to absorb electricity gives it a glowing appearance. In Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla travels to Tiamat’s Arctic lair – the largest source of natural radiation on Earth – and defeats her. He then enters her core to absorb her energy, becoming stronger so he can battle the Scar King and Shimo in the Hollow Earth.
Currently, the only known detail about Tiamat’s backstory is that she killed a Kong in ancient times, establishing a potential conflict that the show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters could develop further. Tiamat is characterized as the personification of original chaos, a description that aligns with how Monarch: Legacy of Monsters portrays Monster X as a devastating, catastrophic force. Considering the creature glimpsed in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 trailer appears to be a glowing, underwater being, it’s reasonable to believe that Titan X is actually Tiamat. However, there are a couple of reasons why some fans think otherwise.
The movie Godzilla: King of the Monsters revealed that the Titan Tiamat was discovered in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and that the organization Monarch built their base around her, but she remained dormant until the events of that film. The new series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which introduced the Hollow Earth and how Titans travel, could change this origin story. It suggests Tiamat first appeared in 2017, then retreated to the Hollow Earth, eventually becoming trapped in the Stone Mountain location. However, knowing Godzilla will ultimately kill Tiamat in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire weakens the impact of presenting her as a major threat. Audiences understand she won’t be a lasting villain in the series, and that her defeat is inevitable.
Interestingly, the story of Tiamat suggests Titan X could be another ancient Titan, playing a key role in Tiamat’s origins and potentially connecting the MonsterVerse to broader historical and mythological events.
Is Titan X the MonsterVerse Version of the Legendary Kraken?

Dark Horse Comics
I’ve always been fascinated by the Kraken! This massive sea monster, originally from Nordic tales, is usually imagined as a colossal squid or octopus – big enough to sink entire ships! Most people probably know it from movies like Clash of the Titans and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Honestly, a creature of that scale feels made for the MonsterVerse. It’s cool to think that some of the aquatic Titans they’ve created are actually meant to explain the origins of legends like the Kraken – classifying them as ‘Kaiju’ and tying them to real-world mythology is a brilliant touch.
Tiamut is a hidden, massive creature in the MonsterVerse, similar to the giant squid Kong battled in Kong: Skull Island. The new Titan, Titan X, featured in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, could be another kraken-like monster designed specifically for the show, giving the creators flexibility with its appearance and storyline. The series might also reveal another, less familiar kraken already existing within the MonsterVerse – Na, Kika – that hasn’t been shown in any of the films yet.
Na Kika is a unique, giant octopus-like creature (a ‘Titan’) that first appeared in the novel version of Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Similar to a briefly seen monster in the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailers, Na Kika has a body made of tentacles. Because Na Kika was created specifically for the MonsterVerse, Legendary Pictures owns the character completely and doesn’t need permission from Toho – the company that owns many of Godzilla’s classic enemies. Giving Na Kika the title of Titan X is a smart move for the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters creators. It allows them to develop a relatively unknown character from the existing franchise and really make it their own.
Hold On…What If Titan X is Cthulhu?

HBO
One of the most fascinating theories surrounding Titan X is that it could be Cthulhu, a massive, ancient creature from the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. First appearing in 1928, Cthulhu is a gigantic being with an octopus-like head, dragon wings, and a humanoid body, dwelling deep beneath the ocean. He’s often considered the inspiration for many modern monsters like Godzilla and King Kong, making his inclusion in the MonsterVerse a natural fit. Interestingly, the MonsterVerse already hints at a connection between Godzilla and Cthulhu – in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla is shown resting in the ruins of Atlantis, which is similar to R’lyeh, the sunken city where Cthulhu sleeps.

Because Cthulhu is no longer under copyright, Legendary Pictures can freely use the character. Though Cthulhu first appeared in stories, not ancient myths, those stories explain how he could exist in the MonsterVerse as both a real creature and a figure from literature that audiences recognize. In H.P. Lovecraft’s original story, “The Call of Cthulhu,” the creature is presented as the source of a hidden, universal anxiety, inspiring cults and haunting people’s dreams. The MonsterVerse could build on this by suggesting that Lovecraft himself experienced visions of Cthulhu, and his stories, while presented as fiction, are actually based on a true reality.
Introducing a powerful Titan like Cthulhu would be a major addition to Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. This creature could match Godzilla and Kong in strength and add exciting new layers to the MonsterVerse’s story. By combining the history of Godzilla with human myths and the complex world of H.P. Lovecraft’s horror, the show could create a truly unique and terrifying villain. Whether it’s Cthulhu, Tiamat, Na Kiki, or a new Kraken-like Titan, Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters promises to permanently change the power dynamics within the MonsterVerse.
