Major The Walking Dead Character Returns In New Dead City Season 3 Set Photos

New photos from season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City offer fans their first glimpse of a popular character returning to the series. The original The Walking Dead ran for 11 seasons and featured many memorable deaths as Rick Grimes and his group faced constant threats.

Both The Walking Dead and its related shows aren’t shy about violence, and Dead City has seen its share of characters die. While some deaths in Dead City, like Bruegel’s in season 2, were significant, they haven’t quite matched the impact of a particularly heartbreaking death from season 5 of the original Walking Dead. However, a reunion between characters is coming soon.

A fan on X, @lovxtwd, recently shared the first images of Emily Kinney reprising her role as Beth Greene, alongside Lauren Cohan as Maggie, for season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. The photos, taken on set, show Maggie and Beth bundled up in winter clothes and smiling in Central Park. Beth’s character died in season 5, episode 8 of The Walking Dead – titled “Coda” – which originally aired on November 30, 2014.

Considering her character died in the original show and The Walking Dead rarely brings characters back to life, Beth’s reappearance in the new spinoff is surprising. The fact that she and Daryl are smiling and surrounded by a normal Central Park – not a zombie-filled landscape – suggests two possible directions for their story.

Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City might feature a flashback showing the Greene sisters together, possibly during a previous trip to New York City. However, recent photos of Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) filming in New York City, where Maggie is wearing familiar clothes, suggest the scene is more likely a dream sequence.

Considering Beth’s character is already deceased, her appearance in Dead City will likely be brief. The second season of Dead City concluded with Maggie choosing to spare Negan’s life, and the two of them joining forces with Perlie Armstrong to confront the approaching New Babylon army in New York.

Production for season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City began on September 8, 2025. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for the new season. While AMC has renewed The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon for a final season, there haven’t been any recent announcements about Dead City beyond its third season.
