Regulators, mount up.
Long Beach’s new minor league baseball team was officially named on Tuesday. They also announced a fun, alternate team name: the Long Beach Regulators. The names were revealed during the city’s annual State of the City speech.
The new Pioneer League team, officially called the Long Beach Coast, will begin playing its games this season at Blair Field, the well-known home of the Long Beach State Dirtbags baseball team.
The Long Beach Coast team announced on Instagram this week that they’ll be playing under a different name – ‘The Regulators‘ – each week. Using an alternate identity like this isn’t a new idea for the team.
Shaikin: Troy Percival, Angels World Series hero, is trying to build a winner in Long Beach
While it’s great that Troy Percival is involved with Long Beach’s Pioneer League team, it’s surprising that a former four-time All-Star with coaching skills isn’t with the Angels organization.
The team’s name is a reference to Warren G’s hit song “Regulate” from 1994, which featured Nate Dogg and pays tribute to the G-funk hip-hop scene in Long Beach.
The rapper told TMZ in September how much it meant to him to represent his hometown of Long Beach, calling it like being part of a team for the city where he grew up. He also expressed his determination to build something successful and win championships.
According to a team representative, the Regulators branding will be featured in a few ways at the ballpark, including special events, unique content, and a small selection of merchandise.
Over the past three decades, Long Beach has hosted three separate minor league baseball teams: the Barracuda (later known as the Riptide), who played in 1995-96, the Breakers in 2001-02, and the Armada from 2005 to 2009.
Besides the expansion team, the Pioneer League has nine other teams, including the Oakland Ballers, Modesto Roadster, and Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers. The league also features teams located in Idaho, Montana, and Utah.
