A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Gets Franchise’s Lowest Season 1 RT Score

Early reviews are out for HBO’s new Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and while generally positive, the reaction isn’t as overwhelmingly enthusiastic as it was for the first seasons of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has received a positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, earning an 85% score and the ‘Certified Fresh’ badge. However, this is lower than the 90% scores achieved by the initial seasons of Game of Thrones (2011) and House of the Dragon (2022).

Despite having the lowest initial Rotten Tomatoes score of any show set in the world of Game of Thrones, the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms still received mostly positive reviews. Critics generally agreed that the show was a good return to Westeros, and that it excelled as a buddy comedy.

The show’s focus on comedic pairings might be confusing some critics of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a change in style that the show’s creator, Ira Parker, had already hinted at.

I absolutely adore those massive, spectacular TV shows, and honestly, this one is different – and that’s okay! I’m hoping viewers will be understanding of its rough edges. Everyone involved really poured their hearts into it, and that’s especially true for Dunk. He’s stepping into completely new territory, and it’s clearly a huge challenge for him, but he’s giving it everything he’s got, and I admire him for that.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Reviews Are Good, but not as Good as Game of Thrones

The HBO series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s stories, originally published as Tales of Dunk and Egg, which have now been compiled into a single book. The first season will cover the events of the first story, The Hedge Knight.

The show will likely continue by adapting George R.R. Martin’s other Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, specifically The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuts on HBO on Sunday, Jan. 18. It will also stream on HBO Max.
