The popular show Death in Paradise is returning soon! Following a recent Christmas special, viewers won’t have to wait long for the new season to begin.
The new season of the show starts on Friday, January 30th at 9pm on BBC One – it’s coming in just over two weeks!
Don Gilet is returning as DI Mervin Wilson, and fans will be pleased to see Don Warrington reprise his role as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson. Although Patterson decided to leave at the end of the previous season, the Christmas special showed he’s had a change of heart and is coming back.

In a review for Digital Spy, we noted that the Christmas special effectively addresses concerns about Mervin’s harshness, particularly through his heartwarming reconnection with his brother.
We’re seeing a side of Mervin that desperately wants to escape his current situation, and his storyline in Death in Paradise is all about that transformation. We think fans should prepare themselves, because it’s going to be a beautiful, though perhaps somewhat winding, journey.

I was listening to an interview with Elliot Gilet, and he explained Mervin’s behavior so well! He said Mervin doesn’t need to justify his actions, but that he’s actually scared. It’s because he’s finally experiencing the family connection he’s always longed for, and it’s a bit overwhelming for him.
I have a feeling we’re going to see a completely different side of him in this one. Usually, work isn’t something that rattles him – he’s amazing at solving crimes, practically does it in his sleep! But this time, it feels like things are going to get a little more personal, and we’ll see him really open up and show some vulnerability.

He explained that home isn’t about who you’re related to, but about feeling comfortable and safe with the people around you. For Mervin, it’s about reaching a point where he feels he can truly be himself and trust those around him.
In addition to Death in Paradise, the series has created two spin-offs, Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise. Return to Paradise recently featured a Christmas special.
Death in Paradise returns on Friday, 30 January at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The latest issue of Living Legends is out now, and it’s dedicated to the incredible Dolly Parton! You can purchase ‘Dolly at 80’ at newsagents or online for only £8.99.
