Good news for fans of the action-packed series Hijack: Season 2 has just premiered on Apple TV, bringing back Idris Elba in the lead role. Following the success of Season 1, Apple quickly ordered another season. However, the future beyond Season 2 is uncertain. Idris Elba has shared his thoughts, and while he doesn’t have definitive answers about more seasons, he did hint at a potential alternative for the show’s continuation.
Idris Elba recently spoke with Radio Times to discuss the upcoming season of Hijack. The popular actor, who will also star in the highly anticipated 2025 film A House of Dynamite, maintains a very busy schedule. He plans to direct two new films, Above the Below and This Is How It Goes, and will once again play DCI John Luther in another Netflix sequel. With so much on his plate, it’s no surprise he hasn’t shared much about his plans for the Apple TV series.
Idris Elba didn’t reveal much about what happens to his character in Season 2 of Hijack, and playfully suggested the season might end on a cliffhanger.
Throughout the season, there’s a constant search for answers. Each episode reveals more, leaving you with questions like ‘What happened?’ ‘Who is responsible?’ and ‘Why?’ The most rewarding part of the ending is finally understanding Sam’s fate – whether he’s alive or not. Of course, I’m just joking about that last part!
People are looking for explanations, and Sam specifically wants to know what’s going on. I believe this is the reason for the current tension.
In Season 1 of Hijack, Idris Elba played Sam Nelson, who successfully resolved a plane hijacking during a flight between Dubai and London using his talent for negotiation. The new season sees Sam facing a different kind of challenge, but the show still delivers plenty of suspense and unexpected events. All eight episodes of Season 2 will be available to stream on Apple TV throughout March.
Can the Future of ‘Hijack’ Hold Anything Other Than Hijacking?
Idris Elba has been careful not to reveal too much about the future of Hijack, including whether there will be more seasons. He wants to give fans closure for his character, but doesn’t want the show to drag on unnecessarily. He’s determined to avoid turning Hijack into a typical crime drama where the hero repeatedly saves the day in increasingly unrealistic situations.

I get asked if I’d do another season all the time, and honestly, I don’t see how it could happen,” Elba says. But he does suggest the show could go on without focusing on the hijacking plot. “There’s another story to tell that doesn’t need the hijacking. At this point, if you enjoy the show and the story, the hijacking is really just a piece of a larger puzzle, isn’t it?” he explains.
I doubt we’ll revisit the show – it would take a lot to get Jim Field Smith back from Barbados – but I’m fascinated by the character Sam Nelson and how someone deals with the aftermath of a traumatic experience. I’d like to explore that storyline, though it wouldn’t have to take over the main plot.
