Prime Video’s upcoming God of War show has announced a new actor to play Odin, and fans are already sharing their thoughts on the casting choice for the Norse god in the live-action series.
God of War fans have the same reaction over Odin’s casting
Prime Video’s upcoming God of War series has added Mandy Patinkin as Odin and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor. These actors will appear in a story based on the game God of War: Ragnarok, released in 2022. Patinkin will play Odin, the main villain who is trying to prevent the end of the world. Ólafsson will play Thor, a key character motivated by revenge for the deaths of gods caused by Kratos and Atreus, and also acting as a father figure.
Mandy Patinkin is well-known for playing Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride and now brings a wealth of experience to his role as Odin. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson previously gained acclaim for his performance as Mr. Drummond in Severance.
The game will feature a Thor more rooted in traditional Norse legends than the one seen in Marvel movies. A key event in the story is Kratos and Atreus killing Thor’s brother, which starts the end of the world in Norse mythology, known as Ragnarok, and enrages Odin and the other Norse gods.
News of the casting choices quickly spread on X (formerly Twitter). Fans reacted positively, with one user praising the casting as “top notch.” Another shared an image celebrating the news with the caption, “GOD OF WAR LIVE ACTION CASTING SO FAR.”
One viewer praised the casting, giving it a perfect 5 out of 5. Another shared a personal story about Mandy Patinkin’s kindness, expressing continued respect for him while also celebrating the surprising and welcome news of his new role – something they felt was a departure from his usual work in a positive way.
A release date for the show hasn’t been revealed yet. Interestingly, Ryan Hurst, who originally voiced Kratos in God of War: Ragnarok, is now playing Kratos in this series, creating a nice link to the game.
