Netflix is taking down a famous science fiction movie about a time-traveling cyborg assassin. This classic action film from the 1980s will no longer be available on the streaming service starting next month, meaning a significant and influential movie is leaving its U.S. selection.
The Terminator is leaving Netflix in February
According to What’s on Netflix, the classic 1984 sci-fi action film The Terminator will be removed from Netflix US on February 1, 2026. The movie, directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, and Linda Hamilton, is listed among the titles leaving the streaming service next month.
The movie was a huge box office hit, earning $78 million globally from a $6.4 million production cost. The story centers around a cyborg assassin sent from 2029 to 1984 with the mission of killing Sarah Connor – the future mother of the leader who will fight against Skynet, a dangerous artificial intelligence bent on destroying humankind. A soldier named Kyle Reese also travels back in time to protect Sarah.
The Terminator is widely considered a groundbreaking film in both science fiction and action genres. Its innovative use of special effects – including practical effects, stop-motion, and a distinctive electronic score by Brad Fiedel – set a new standard. The movie’s exploration of themes like the dangers of artificial intelligence, time travel, and the merging of humans and machines was highly influential and continues to inspire filmmakers today.
The movie was so popular it spawned a whole franchise, including five sequels, a TV show, comic books, and video games. In 2008, it was also recognized for its cultural and historical significance when the Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry.
As a movie buff, I was bummed to hear that a bunch of great films are leaving Netflix soon! Along with the previously announced title, I just found out that Parasite, Oblivion, Groundhog Day, Charlie’s Angels, and The Patriot are all going to be removed on the same day. It’s always a bit of a pain, but Netflix has to do this because their licensing deals run out, and unfortunately, the dates these movies disappear can be different depending on where you live.
