3 Years Later, John Krasinski’s Tense Action Spy Series that “Bows Out with Its Best Season” Makes a Streaming Comeback

The character Jack Ryan, created by Tom Clancy, has been portrayed by many talented actors in films and on television, including Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and John Krasinski. With a new movie sequel in the works, the popular Prime Video series starring Krasinski is once again gaining attention and climbing the streaming charts.

The show first aired in 2018 and quickly became popular, running for four seasons until 2023 and giving John Krasinski a starring role. Although it didn’t always receive rave reviews, the final season was a critical success, earning a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and providing a satisfying conclusion. Despite fan disappointment at its ending, a spin-off and continuation movie were announced within a couple of years. Here’s what the show is about:

CIA analyst Jack Ryan uncovers strange financial transactions that lead him on a dangerous chase across Europe and the Middle East. His investigation pits him against a dangerous terrorist leader who is planning a large-scale attack on the United States and its allies.

Principal photography for the film began in February, and Krasinski marked his return to the character by filming his first scenes on set. While the story remains under wraps, there’s potential to draw from several of Tom Clancy’s novels that haven’t been made into movies yet. An official release date hasn’t been announced, but the film is currently projected to come out in early 2027.

It was new territory to see Jack Ryan leading his own TV show, but fans are now wondering if a movie adaptation could happen. This is a common question with many popular TV series – is a film really needed, or could it ruin a good ending? John Krasinski believes the movie will offer something fresh, as he explained to Collider:

We were thrilled to make a movie! While telling a story over a longer format is quite different from television, it’s really satisfying to tighten things up, speed up the pace, and build suspense. This project lets us do all the exciting action sequences we couldn’t fit into the show.

John Krasinski will return as Ryan, and Wendell Pierce is back as CIA agent James Greer. Mike Kelly will reprise his role as Agent Mike November, and Betty Gabriel returns as Elizabeth Wright, a CIA leader who appeared in previous seasons. The film also welcomes new cast members Sienna Miller, Max Beesley, JJ Feild, and Douglas Hodge. Andrew Bernstein is directing, and John Krasinski and Aaron Rabin wrote the screenplay.
