Star Trek EPs Tease Deep Space Nine Easter Eggs in New Show

The creators of a new Star Trek show have hinted at hidden references to the beloved series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (which originally aired from 1993 to 1999). The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, is set roughly 300 years in the future and will follow a group of fresh recruits as they train to become Starfleet officers.

In an interview with TrekMovie, Kurtzman and Landau talked about Starfleet Academy. Landau revealed that the fifth episode will be a tribute to Deep Space Nine.

Landau explained that the show is filled with references to classic Star Trek. Fans have particularly noticed Harry Kim appearing as an admiral on the ‘Wall of Heroes,’ and the show’s central areas—like the ‘Sato Atrium’ and ‘Uhura Pavilion’—are named after Trek legends. He also described episode 5 as a tribute to Deep Space Nine.

Kurtzman explained that Starfleet Academy can be a great way for new viewers to get into Star Trek, even if they haven’t seen Deep Space Nine. For those already familiar with Deep Space Nine, it will add another layer of enjoyment. He emphasized that the show’s aim is to attract new fans and ensure Star Trek continues to thrive for future generations, because if they don’t, the franchise won’t survive.

Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Zoë Steiner, Bella Shepard, and Karim Diané are among the actors joining the cast of Starfleet Academy, playing Nahla Ake, Caleb Mir, Tarima Sadal, Genesis Lythe, and Jay-Den Kraag respectively. Tig Notaro and Oded Fehr will also appear as Jett Reno and Charles Vance.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premieres on Paramount+ on January 15, 2026.
