Guy Moon, Emmy-nominated composer of beloved Nickelodeon animated shows, dies at 63

Guy Moon, the composer who created music for several well-known animated TV shows – including the popular Nickelodeon series “Fairly OddParents” – has passed away at the age of 63.

The Emmy-nominated composer died Thursday morning in a traffic accident, his family shared on Facebook Saturday. His daughter, Savannah Moon, explained in a phone call that he was riding his Vespa when the accident occurred. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death was due to injuries sustained in the crash.

According to his children – Chelsea, Savannah, and Dusty Moon – the composer was a warm and joyful person, often described as a “walking jukebox” due to his vast musical knowledge. They recalled him being accepting, playful, and peaceful both at home and in his work. His family emphasized that he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Dusty explained that while he was remarkably gifted, the music wasn’t about showcasing his skill. It was always focused on expressing love and building connections with others.

Jim Ward, a well-known voice actor who worked on popular animated series like ‘Fairly OddParents’ and ‘Danny Phantom,’ as well as the ‘Ratchet & Clank’ video games, has passed away at the age of 66.

Savannah explained that he had a talent for bringing out the best in others and focusing on what truly mattered, whether through his music or his conversations.

Guy Moon created the memorable music for Nickelodeon’s animated series, “Fairly OddParents.” The show follows Timmy Turner, a 10-year-old boy whose fairy godparents use wishes to help him with daily life. From 2001 to 2017, Moon composed the score for over 150 episodes of the show, as noted by IMDb, and received four Emmy Award nominations for his work.

Originally from Wisconsin, Moon also contributed to the animated series “Danny Phantom” and “T.U.F.F. Puppy,” both created by Butch Hartman, who also made “Fairly OddParents.” Hartman shared his grief over Moon’s passing on Instagram on Saturday.

Hartman said he was still gathering his thoughts and would release a statement later.

Composer Moon began his career in the 1980s, working on popular projects like “The Land Before Time,” the animated “Addams Family” series, “Leave It to Beaver,” and “Johnny Bravo.” He continued to build his resume in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, contributing to films such as “The Brady Bunch Movie,” “Minority Report,” “Fight Club,” “Evan Almighty,” and “Leap Year.”

Throughout his career at Nickelodeon, Moon worked on shows like “ChalkZone,” several crossover episodes of “Fairly OddParents” and “Jimmy Neutron,” “Back at the Barnyard,” and “Big Time Rush.” More recently, he shifted his focus to live-action and independent films and television, including the drama “The Green Veil” with John Leguizamo and the 2024 film “Forty-Seven Days with Jesus.” His final credited work was as a composer for “The Artist,” a series on the streaming service the Network, in 2025.

Award-winning composer Moon loved to include music in everyday family life, whether by turning observations into little songs or playing piano for loved ones. While he received recognition for his professional work, his daughter Chelsea believes he would have been most proud of the musical bonds he shared with his children, all of whom shared his passion.

She shared that they were his proudest achievement. “He was so proud of us and loved working with us,” she said. “He’d likely say that having us was the best thing he ever accomplished.”

Jeff Garcia, a Los Angeles comedian and the voice of Sheen Estevez from the Nickelodeon show ‘Jimmy Neutron,’ has passed away at the age of 50.

Those who knew Moon spoke of his deep and unwavering faith, which he skillfully integrated with his demanding career as a composer. His family shared that he often combined his religious beliefs with his passion for music, organizing events at church to showcase contemporary Christian music and, when his children were young, co-leading the youth ministry with his wife.

Chelsea described him as someone who truly lived out Jesus’s message of welcoming everyone. He had a deep, yet simple, love for God, and made everyone feel included and accepted when he was around.

Savannah explained that he wasn’t standoffish or exclusive. He simply gave freely of his time and welcomed everyone.

After damaging his eardrum a few years ago, Moon developed tinnitus, making it difficult for him to work. Despite this, he continued to enjoy life and often rode his Vespa around San Pedro, according to Chelsea.

Besides his children, Moon is remembered by his wife, Jennifer Moon, his parents, two sisters, and seven grandchildren, with another grandchild expected soon.

The family announced on Facebook that they will honor Moon’s life with a celebration on February 7th, which is his birthday. They plan to hold a memorial service in Los Angeles, and another one in Wisconsin sometime afterward.
